K.C. Chiefs Game: Nonplussed!
by David Bell
Nonplussed: that single word capsulizes how I feel about the Sunday Night Football Game at Arrowhead versus the Cincinnati Bengals. At a loss? Don’t know what to say?
Truly: if one of the glaring errors to which you must address yourself is a botched kickoff — then all things are swell. Monday morning I grew tired of reading article after article that was a gushingly, positive report, even about a much maligned defense is there more that needs to be written or read? Gushy Romance novels all… that material is not on my reading list. So, I stopped reading.
My View of this Game Came in Quarter One
I came away from the game with an impression that the game was well in hand. “The reason is…” you ask? On a single play in the first quarter, the men being blocked on the left side of the Chiefs front 5 were on the ground and both LOT Eric Fisher and LOG Cam Erving were lying on the ground. That is a good indicator that the line, which opens holes for the running backs and protects the quarterback so that he can throw the ball, is doing the basic job and it probably indicates it is a lot better than that.
With this game, well in hand at halftime, the Chiefs offense was hitting on all cylinders. On the other side of the ball, the defense played a full football game stopping the Bengals from getting into scoring position on all but two drives. Dee Ford and Chris Jones each recorded a sack and Ron Parker picked off a Dalton pass: it was a 33-yard pick-6 a couple of seconds later. Patrick Mahomes threw 4 TD passes upping his total to 22 aerial TDs. He threw his 5th interception but this had no affect on his guidance of the Chiefs to win number six in a dominating performance and that dominance included the players on defense.
Eight players were on the receiving end of Patrick Mahomes passes. Four players approached 100 receiving yards in the game. Kareem Hunt was brutal in the run game for the Chiefs — he looked to be the superstar he appears destined to be.
Back to the offensive line: the Chiefs again exceeded 30 points in it’s 7th game in a row. One of the readers noticed last night that a KC star player’s name was not mentioned: Dustin Colquitt.
Onward to the Broncos and Beyond
This past Sunday morning, I offered up an article, a Five Day Forecast, stating that by the time the “Bye” week arrived, the Chiefs should have a record of 9-2.
I am not sure I don’t really enjoy taking things back — nor second guessing myself. I had decided that the Chiefs would lose to the Rams in Mexico City for the second loss of the season. This was based on the Rams own dynamic offense and a defense that was superior to that of the Chiefs. At this point, I am about ready to amend that prediction but, the upcoming week features a 2nd home game in a row against AFC West foe: the Denver Broncos.
Indeed the NFL’s Schedule Genies gave the Chiefs a respite stretch and in the five day forecast the game next week against the Broncos… and the game against the Rams… appear to be the toughest in that five game stretch. The only NFL true road game is against the Browns, though for record keeping purposes, K.C. is listed as the visiting team in Mexico City.
If the Kansas City defense performs as well this Sunday, as it did in the Bengal Tiger contest, the Chiefs outlook should remain a high jingo positive. Perhaps then I shall amend my forecast.
