K.C. Chiefs and the Saturday Sum Up! 2.24.18

Whats up guys? So, Friday has brought us some interesting news and your absolute favorite Chiefs fan writer is here to put it all into perspective. I am your favorite fan writer if you didn’t know. Now I am certain that a substantial percentage of my loyal following of avid readers is slightly miffed about the recent roster move and that is to be expected. Others might say it was bound to happen sooner or later, but we can get into all that here shortly. With all of the recent headlines we should just jump right in. Here is your Saturday Sum Up!

Moving on from Marcus

In a surprise move the Kansas City Chiefs have cut ties with All-Pro Cornerback Marcus Peters. The recent roster shakeup will see the 25 year old corner shipped far away to the land of Los Angeles. With the Rams being one of the few teams to even entertain a trade scenario for the Pro-Bowler leaves many a fan wondering why there was so little interest. News is out that there were two teams looking to tango for Peters and one of them was only showing a passing interest. That team is the 49ers. Cleveland was one of the teams expected to show the most interest, offering a reunion between Peters and John Dorsey, who was the general manager that played a role in bringing him to Kansas City in the first place. It is interesting, the lack of suitors for the leagues best corner for the past few years, so one must wonder if his personality and abrasiveness with his coaching staff scared away possible landing spots. I for one believed that Peters was not long for the Chiefs and feared seeing him suit up in black and silver for the soon to be Las Vegas Raiders. While it is still possible to see Marcus in the new black hole it is less likely that will happen with his recent trade. As of this writing there is no news regarding the payment the Chiefs will receive as compensation for their part in the trade but one would have to assume that the benefit would have to be damn-near astounding. Even with Peters’ antics and quirks the talent is obvious. Anything less that a first round pick along with another set of higher picks would be a slap in the face to Chiefs fans everywhere. I do not wish Marcus any ill-will or hold any grudges. Having seen the writing on the wall, like many other Chiefs fans, we all knew there would be a day that we would either release or trade Peters. Trading him just guarantees a return on investment. Whether that return will be enough is yet to be seen. One question does come to mind as I am writing this piece. Why trade him now when the Chiefs front office could have easily retained him for a year, exercised the 5th year option and traded him after the 2018 season? Something that is brought up by multiple sources is the fact that Peters “got into it” with a coach. This may have been the last straw and head coach Andy Reid may have initiated the possibility of a trade. For now this is all just speculation but I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Why do you think the Chiefs traded Peters? Let me know below.

Finding Fitting Pieces

Pretty much all the Chiefs news is overshadowed by the Marcus Peters trade deal. So I thought I would get a discussion going as to who you think would be a good fit for the Chiefs secondary. The list of free agents is long and not all will be an ideal fit but I will list the top 10 choices. Malcom Butler age 28, E.J. Gaines age 26, Rashaan Melvin age 28, Bryce Callahan age 26, Trumaine Johnson age 28, Patrick Robinson age 30, Prince Amukamara age 26, Kyle Fuller age 26, Darqueze Dennard age 26, and T.J. Carrie age 28. This list comes from Walter Football and I believe their rating system to be superior to others I’ve seen so that is what I am going with. Out of this list there are a few names that come to the forefront of the conversation. Trumaine Johnson is one of them. With the addition of Peters to the Rams secondary Johnson finds himself on the outside looking in. After being the recipient of two franchise tags from the Los Angeles Rams and earning over $30 million for the past two seasons it would appear by all accounts that the Rams are just ready to move on from him. Perhaps a change of scenery is just what Johnson was looking for. Another player who already has some ties to Arrowhead is Kyle Fuller. His brother has already been in a part of a trade deal between the Chiefs front office and the Washington Redskins. Fuller, a former first round draft pick by the Chicago Bears is all set for free agency this year and has a possibility to be reunited with his brother. Some rumors around the league are linking the soon to be former Bear to the chowder eating Patriots. Which would make sense with the pending release of Malcom Butler. As of right now everything is topsy turvy and we will just have to wait for more news to come out of One Arrowhead Drive.

There is not a lot of news this time of year and we can at least be thankful (if you can call it that) that Veach is at least making this offseason interesting. First with the trade of Alex Smith and now the trade of Marcus Peters there has been some things to discuss around the water cooler as of late. One thing is for certain: Veach, unlike Dorsey, has no qualms about doing what he believes is necessary to advance the Chiefs. No matter how unsavory the backlash from fans may be he is putting his mark on this team. Whether that mark is good or not, will be seen shortly. I do believe Veach is doing a good job and setting the team up for success. Jettisoning unwieldy contracts and making the hard decisions are qualities we need in a general manager. Well, there is my rant for the week. Let me know how much you love or hate me below. As always VIVA LA JET SWEEP and GO CHIEFS!
