Well all, another week has come and gone. I hope that you have had a good week. I know I have! I would like to announce that this past week my wife and I have finally gotten our permanent placement and we now have two beautiful little girls placed with us in foster care! Sorry for the lack of articles from me in the past few weeks, I have just been running around like crazy getting everything in place for the girls to arrive. I will be back to form and putting out more articles in no time! Now enough about me, lets cut to the chase! Here it is, your Sunday Sum Up!
Tim Terry Time!
In a quick move earlier this week, John Dorsey signed Tim Terry as the new Director of Pro Personel. Terry has served as the Assistant Pro Personel Director for the past 9 years in the Packers front office. He will succeed Will Lewis and play a key part in operations at One Arrowhead Drive. This move signifies two clear things to Chiefs fans. One – Dorsey is committed to Kansas City and not planning on going anywhere. Two – We have a tenured professional who by all indications is well qualified for this promotion. Only time will tell if he is up to the task but there has to be some reason why he was able to keep his job closely working with Ted Thompson for as long as he had. I believe this to be a great addition to the team and it should pay dividends down the road.
The Mac Attack May Not Be Back
Jeremy Maclin has been noticeably absent in recent memory. After originally signing with our beloved Kansas City Chiefs March of 2015 he was thought to be the savior of our passing offense. With a huge 5 year 55 million dollar contract Maclin was expected to produce right out of the gate. However, Jeremy failed to live up to expectations. He did eventually put up decent numbers in 2015, finishing the season with a career-high 1088 yards on 87 catches. Expectations were high for him in the playoff game against the Houston Texans. He might as well not have shown up for the game. Kansas City went on to destroy the Texans 30-0 but Maclin only completed 3 catches before being knocked out of the game with a high ankle sprain. Playing through the pain he went with the team to play against the Patriots and only managed 2 catches. After having a full offseason to heal and train up he was looking for a comeback performance in 2016. Unfortunately, the season didn’t go the way he wanted. Only registering 44 catches and 536 yards. Not exactly the numbers you expect from your number 1 receiver. With the emergence of Hill as a legitimate downfield threat, Maclin will only see his targets reduced even more. If he can not rebound to his previous form, Jeremy may find himself out of a job. With Kansas City tight on funds, he may become a cap saving casualty next year. This time next year we may be looking for a new #1 receiver.
Turning The Corner
The Kansas City Chiefs are sporting one of the best defensive backfields in the league. Eric Berry, Marcus Peters, and Ron Parker are prime examples of how good the Chiefs secondary is. One hole in the lineup is the corner position opposite Peters. Every since the departure of Sean Smith to the enemy (Oakland) opposing quarterbacks have taken notice of this deficiency. Choosing to throw to the empty side of the field. It would stand to reason that Dorsey would address this glaring need in the recent draft. Not 1 pick was used for the cornerback position. The people in charge of Arrowhead did choose a safety in the sixth round but this is hardly the shutdown corner we all expected. Leon McQuay III may indeed make the switch to corner but, he would need years of study and practice to grow into the role. This could mean a couple of different things. The Chiefs could be waiting until teams make the final cutdowns at the end of the offseason and Dorsey is planning on picking up a veteran corner on the cheap or the team already has the other positions locked down with someone on the current roster. I believe it to be the latter.
Enter Terrance Mitchell. At only 25 years of age, Mitchell is coming into his own in the prime of his career. The former 7th round pick has bounced around the league with the Cowboys, Bears, Cowboys again, Texans, and finally ended up with the Chiefs. He was signed in September of 2016 to the practice squad and showed something to merit his promotion to the active roster in October. In only 7 games played he tallied 19 tackles – 17 of which are solo, and 6 passes defended. Coming from the practice squad and putting up these numbers is no small feat. No one will say he was perfect last year, he was out of position at times but able to quickly recover. If Mitchell can emulate even a portion of his previous year’s production he could prove to be a boon to an already great secondary. Imagine, Berry, and Parker roaming free in the back end with Peters and Mitchell holding down the sidelines. I would be excited to see that and I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks so.
