Happy Mothers Day Chiefs fans! Now before we begin I want to thank all of the mothers and wives out there who put up with our nonsense. They are truly very special women and we would be lost without them in our lives. Now, without further ado, here’s your Sunday Sum Up!
D.J. on the Mend
“I’m still on track, the goal is to be ready by camp.” Those are bold words coming from our esteemed linebacker. Derrick Johnson is still recovering from his second Achilles tendon tear. If his words are to be true that would mean that he expects to be in football shape come late July. When DJ went down with a torn tendon back in December against the Raiders many thought he would consider hanging up the cleats. His recent actions would suggest that couldn’t be further from the truth. After spending the past 12 seasons suiting up in red and gold one must wonder just how much more #56 has left in the tank. If his recent play is any indication, the 4-time pro-bowler could be suiting up for a few years more.
Oh, Stanley! (Jean-Baptiste)
The Kansas City Chiefs have taken a flyer on former second-round pick Stanley Jean-Baptiste. Stanley was originally drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft by the New Orleans Saints. He was an effective safety for the University of Nebraska. In his senior season alone SJB recorded 41 tackles, 12 passes defended, and four interceptions. This production garnered him attention before the 2014 draft and he was scooped up quickly by a needy Saints defense. However he never made much of an impression down in the bayou, only playing in 4 games as a rookie, and most of his play on special teams to boot. He was discarded by New Orleans and bounced around the league on practice squads. Registering time with Detroit and Seattle. It would seem that Dorsey, Reid, or even Sutton liked something about him. At least enough to warrant a camp invite. The front office signed on May 9th. Only time will tell if SJB is someone worth holding on to or just another camp body. If he can replicate any of his collegiate career, he may be worth keeping as depth and special team’s play, if Toub wants him that is.
The QB Whisperer
Many pundits are quick to label Andy Reid as one of the best QB coaches in the league. It would seem as if one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game is in agreement with them. Brett Farve formerly of the Falcons, then the Packers, then the Jets, then the Vikings is one of the best to play the position. He was a strong-armed gunslinger who isn’t afraid of chucking the ball deep. Farve has recently made a few comments about newly acquired Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. “He couldn’t have a better coach at this point in his career. Andy is one of my all time favorites. No doubt. I played a long time, and I’ve been around a lot of coaches, but Reid couldn’t have come at a better time for me in my career.” That is high praise from one of the best. Many fans have wondered if Reid can really live up to his legend. Developing quarterbacks is a delicate business. Too fast and they crumble under the pressure, too slow and you stifle their confidence. If it is Andy who really is the instrument in helping quarterbacks achieve greatness then we as fans are in one of the best positions imaginable. We get to sit back and watch a smart quarterback in Smith hold down the fort while our QBOTF is groomed and taught the ropes. If all of the hype around Reid is even half true, this will make for a very interesting season.
