K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Open Thread: Day Fourteen

Yesterday was a sloppy day at the Kansas City Chiefs training camp. The quarterbacks threw loads of INTs and the defense allowed loads of long pass plays… so, I guess it all evens out. To hear the Chiefs offensive coaches explain it, when you have to go up against a good defense — which the Chiefs do have — then it’s a pretty good showing for them to come out of it the way they did.

Following is a list of some of the things that could be heard from the Chiefs staff after practice yesterday:

Brad Childress (Assistant Head Coach) in reference to the Offensive Line and Zach Fulton playing Left Tackle on Monday with the first team:

“Position flexibility is huge… You’d love to have 10 guys, but if you can find 7 and a couple guys who can swing for you and you’re in good shape.”

Britt Reid (Defensive Line Coach) about Rakeem Nunez-Roches:

“For Nacho (RNR), the sky’s the limit. I’d put him in the middle… I’d put him anywhere” He also conformed that the 25 lbs. of extra weight that RNR put on in the lower half of his body is going to help him anchor against the run.

Al Harris (Secondary Coach) about the challenges of facing Patrick Mahomes II every day:

“They made the right decision there.” Harris also spoke about playing WRs tight when Mahomes is quarterbacking and how you have to be careful… but he was always sure to say the same things apply to Alex Smith.

Gary Gibbs (Linebackers Coach) on Andy Reid:

“By far the best head coach I’ve worked with. That’s no disrespect to other coaches I’ve worked with and under. I just think he’s got a great mind-set, he’s smart, he’s organized, he treats people fairly and with respect. I say this seriously, it’s an honor to be on his staff and work with and for him.”

It’s hard to believe but tomorrow is the last day of Training Camp for the Chiefs in St. Joe. The weather has been incredibly temperate… or perfect for practicing in. St. Joe had thunderstorms over night which may have lasted until 6:00 this morning. The low was 67 degree and it will get up to 82 degrees at noon with cloudy skies all morning. This also means that practice will be on a soggy field (as long as there are no thunderstorms with lightening, because if that happens, then practice moves indoor where fans may not observe).

• 9:15 a.m.  Wednesday, Aug 16 – Last Day of Training Camp – Military Appreciation Day – Final Camp Practice, Camp Breaks
• GAME DAY — Saturday, 6:00 PM at the Cincinnati Bengals
