K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Open Thread: Day Thirteen

With the the National Football season only three weeks and three days away, it’s time for the Kansas City Chiefs to begin to plan and scheme for their big contest against the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in Foxboro, New England. That’s reason enough alone for players like Travis Kelce and Chris Jones and Bennie Logan to find their way back onto the practice field. Why? While the three remaining preseason games have little meaning… except to those on the bubble… I can tell you what does have great meaning for Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs: winning the first regular season game of the year.

You may recall hearing that head coach Andy Reid has a very good record following the bye week at 16-2. That means when Reid has extra time to prepare for a game, he does extremely well. You can add to that Mr. Reid’s opening day record for the past nine years, 7-2. In fact, he is 5-0 on the road during that time. Don’t doubt for a minute that Andy Reid knows how to beat Bill Belichick either. You may recall the 41-14 drubbing the Chiefs gave Tom Brady and the Pats in 2014. A game in which Tom Brady was forced from the field and everyone was all a buzz, for a week or so, talking about how this was the beginning of the end for him. All of that simply means, you can expect the Chiefs to give the current Super Bowl winners all they can handle on opening night.

It also means that if the Chiefs do beat the Patriots, they will in all likelihood have to beat them later in the year too.

By the time opening night rolls around, we can only hope that the Chiefs will be full steam ahead at every position. That’s a good reason the practices we’re watching now are so important. I was going to use this space to talk about the Chiefs QBOTF Patrick Mahomes II moving up from the #3 to the #2 position on the depth chart but I don’t believe that’s what Andy Reid and his staff have on their collective minds right now. Right now, everything they do is preparing for the Pats and opening night.

The weather report for St. Joe today is a high of 86 degrees and a low of 68, which is about what the temp will be to begin practice.

Following is the schedule for the remainder of the week and don’t forget the Preseason Game Two is coming this Saturday evening in Cincinnati at 6:00 PM (Kansas City time – Central time zone).
