The streak is over. The Kansas City Chiefs have drafted a quarterback in the first round. Let me say that again. The Kansas City Chiefs have drafted a quarterback in the first round. That quarterback is the strong arm Patrick Mahomes II out of Texas Tech University. John Cooney of PASS2Win.com points out that Mahomes has the best ball velocity (60 MPH) of any QB in recent memory and his ability to throw the ball long should not be lost on fans of the Chiefs. In three years at TTU Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards, 93 TDs and 29 INTs. In the last two seasons, Mr. Mahomes ranked high in many Big-12 categories including: 1st in Total Plays, 1st in Total Yards, 1st in Passing Yards, 1st in Pass Attempts, and 1st in Pass Completions. He also won the Sammy Baugh Trophy in 2016, an award given to college football’s best passer.
Mike Mayock of NFL.com says of Patrick Mahomes, “He is a big-time gunslinger like Brett Favre. He’s got the athletic ability. My question is can he learn to win in the pocket because to play in the NFL, at a certain point, you have to.” One of the first quarterbacks that Andy Reid ever worked with was Brett Favre in Green Bay. Reid was Favre’s QB coach in Green Bay the same year Farve won the Super Bowl. The monicker of “gunslinger” may have started with Favre but also clearly applies to Mahomes.
To get the rights to the tenth pick in the this year’s draft, the Kansas City Chiefs had to trade their first round pick this year plus their first round pick next year and their third round pick (91st pick) this year… to jump up from pick #27 to #10 where they selected Mahomes.
The last time the Chiefs took a first round QB was in 1983 selecting Todd Blackledge. Now, that streak is over and done with. Kaput!
If Patrick Mahomes progresses well, he may be able to move up and take over the starting reigns in 2018. If not, then he’ll likely sit behind Tyler Bray for a second season allowing starter Alex Smith to remain the starter this year and next. After that, the Chiefs must decide which direction they’re going at quarterback.
