Lousy, No Good, Dirty Rotten Chiefs
Lost to the Seahawks, 38-31
by Laddie Morse | December 24, 2018
Well, Merry frickin’ Christmas eve! Last night the Kansas City Chiefs played what could be seen as their worst performance of the year against the Seattle Seahawks. There wasn’t much in this game to hang your hat on to claim that the Chiefs are the best team in the AFC. Nope, these lousy, no good, dirty rotten Chiefs lost to the Seahawks, 38-31, and it wasn’t really that close.
What started out as a pretty great weekend, saw the Chargers losing in L.A. to the Ravens then the Eagles beat the Texans. Houston and Los Angeles both were threats to take over the number one seed in the AFC and the Chargers could also take the top seed in the AFC West… but the Chiefs lost the opportunity to slam the door shut on those teams and secure a two week layoff to heal up by resting players against Oakland next weekend and then resting everyone the first week of the playoffs. Now, if the Chiefs slip and fall on their faces against the Raiders, although that’s highly unlikely, they’ll be playing the first week of the playoffs and some other team will be sitting home laughing at the Chiefs calamitous final two weeks. However, let’s not get ahead of ourselves… the Chiefs were totally asleep in Seattle and it raises more questions than we ever thought to raise before that game.
- First of all, what do the Chiefs have in this offensive group of players?
- Is Sammy Watkins going to play in any more games this season?
- If not, is QB Patrick Mahomes going to get on the same page with his new skyscraper WR Kelvin Benjamin?
- That raises more questions: did Mahomes just have an off day or was this showing us something about his real colors? At times he couldn’t hit the broad side of a bar in Westport. Other times, he contorted his body to make arm angled throws that aren’t possible. He totally whiffed on a wide open Travis Kelce in the end zone when the Seahawks coverage completely broke down.
- Is Tyreek Hill going to heal completely before the playoffs arrive? It’s obvious he is still hobbled.
- Is Eric Fisher devolving? He looked like the guy who holds the door open for an elderly lady at the hospital. Will he ever be able to stop that draft?
The truth is, the Seahawks were just a markedly better team than the Chiefs on Sunday.
While RB Damien Williams did gain over 100 yards rushing against the Seahawks, he also fumbled the ball away in the second half.
Seattle purely looked like the better team. They looked like a team that is progressing while, the Chiefs… are heading in the opposite direction. The Chiefs only had the ball for 24:58. The Seahawks used a ball control offense which gained 210 yards on the ground. That allowed Seattle to dominate first downs 31-to-22 and they had 464 yards of total offense compared to the Chief 419 and added two lost fumbles by the Chiefs into the mix and it’s no wonder they looked darn awful. Of course, it all makes sense when you consider that the Seahawks held the ball for 10 more minutes than the Chiefs.
Sooner or later the Chiefs have to address their abysmal defense. The Chiefs offense has provided an average of 37.5 points per game… during their four losses. Most fans have thought that if the Chiefs get into a shootout they can win those types of games. That’s simply not the truth about this team. Opponents have figured out how to beat the Chiefs: control the clock and run the ball and keep the Chiefs offense off the field.
That’s exactly what Seattle did on Sunday evening.
Now, the Chiefs are stuck in the middle of a two-game losing streak. Not the kind of momentum they want going into the playoffs… much less facing one of their arch rivals next weekend. A loss to the Raiders would prove to be disastrous on many levels. However, it does appear like a possibility now that the Chiefs have established a pattern of ineptitude having lost 3 of their last five games.
Yes, Patrick Mahomes can add to his historic season by throwing for more yards than any other K.C. QB in Chiefs history with 4,602 yards. Plus, he now holds the NFL’s single season record for the most TD passes on the road with 30.
Most prolific season by a QB in franchise history! pic.twitter.com/SFeMgzti2P

I love what Patrick Mahomes has done this year. But I'm sticking with Drew Brees as MVP for a really simple reason: On big stages, he's come up huge for the Saints. Outstanding against the Rams, Steelers and Eagles.

Yes, DL Chris Jones now holds the record for the most consecutive games with a sack in 11 straight games. However, I’m sure he’d trade that for a victory.

Yes, TE Travis Kelce now owns the record for the most receiving yards in a single season by a tight end… but what are these records but amusing milestones on the way to the playoffs. These records without a set of playoff wins means little.

There’s one more tweet I’d like to share with you but I’ll have to do that as a screen capture because that game apparently has bought out the vilest of feeling in some of the Chiefs fondest fans. The 2018 Kansas City Chiefs are the sum of their parts… and that includes the defense.
If you weren’t aware, Chris Jones didn’t make the Pro Bowl this year, which is bad enough, but some think he should get consideration for Defensive Player of the Year… and why not.
Chris Jones would be my runner up for DPOY. Can’t believe he wasn’t voted to the pro bowl.

If you’re a long time Chiefs fan like many people I know, merely making the playoffs will not be enough to satisfy. Right now, this team looks like a team filled with some players who are very, very good, while others need to be released… starting with the Defensive Coordinator. It’s hard for me to see the Chiefs going deep into the playoffs, even if they maintain the advantage of playing all their playoff games in Arrowhead… not if they play the way they did today.
Some headlines have treated this game as if the Chiefs were battling to the end. Yes, they tried an on-side with 1:20 left in the game but still needed a TD to tie it up. Yes, they tied the game up at one point 17-to-17… but the Chiefs never really had any control of the tempo, or the momentum, and they made one mistake after another basically handing this game away. It’s hard ot make a case that the Chief were in this game to win it. Words are one thing… performance is quite another. Speaking of “words” here are Andy Reid’s post game comments:
