Mahomes Shines and a Look Ahead

Mahomes Shines and a Look Ahead, by Paul Pulley – on Sunday, against the division rival Denver Broncos, Patrick Mahomes played his best game of the 2019 season. Even though the weather conditions were horrible, Mahomes looked extremely comfortable throwing the ball. His passes were sharp and extremely accurate, at any range: 340 passing yards passing in those conditions was simply amazing. The only play by Mahomes that could have made a huge difference, was on the play he scrambled and threw the pick. If Mahomes had thrown to his left quickly, before getting pressured, DTrain was open and probably would have scored.

Travis Kelce had another huge day, becoming the first and only tight end in the history of the National Football League to have 4 consecutive 1,000 receiving yard seasons. Although Kelce just turned 30 years old and has been in the league for 7 years, his rookie season was lost due to a knee injury and all of his production has been in the 6 seasons since. If he decides to play for another 6 or 7 years, and he is under contract for the next two, he could come close to breaking Tony Gonzalez record for tight ends of 15,127 career yards. Kelce currently has 6,367 career receiving yards.

In spite of the weather — snowy and in the 20’s — Mahomes receivers had eight different ones throughout the game and all had excellent hands. The Denver defensive backs made some plays, but I don’t believe there were any drops… unlike the Broncos, who dropped several passes.

While on the subject of the Broncos, just as I expected, get a lead and put some pressure on Lock, and his performance dwindles. The longer the game went, the less accurate he became, along with making poorer decisions.

On to This Saturday

Enough of the Broncos, who for the 3rd consecutive season, have guaranteed themselves a losing record, the Chiefs, need to be onto the Chicago Bears. However, first things first, this coming Saturday, we need to be fans of the Bills, for about 3 ½ hours, as the Buffalo travels to New England to watch videos of themselves practicing. Oh, wait, I guess they’re going to play a game against Coach Bilicheat and the Pastriots. If the Bills can overcome illegal filming and under-inflated balls, and assuming their equipment gets to the stadium on time, a victory by Buffalo would put the Chiefs in the driver’s seat for the number 2 seed in the AFC and a bye week to start the playoffs.

And Then Comes Sunday

On Sunday evening, December, 22 @ 7:20 PM CST, our Kansas City Chiefs travel to the windy city for a matchup with the Chicago Bears in historic Soldier Field. I believe the LA Coliseum is the only NFL stadium that has been around longer. The Bears season has had a lot of ups and downs, with both wins and losses coming is sets. They currently have 7 wins and 7 losses, and they really shouldn’t be a problem as the only team they have defeated that has a winning record, is the Vikings.

A Quick Look Ahead

The Chiefs need to win their final two games, both of which are against teams that are out of playoff contention. Although, depending on the outcome of this weeks games involving the Patriots and Texans, week 17 may not matter.

    • Ravens – with a win Sunday versus the dysfunctional Cleveland Browns, the Baltimore Ravens will lock up home field advantage.
    • Patriots – New England’s final two games are in Foxborough, this week against the Bills and week 17 versus the Miami Dolphins.
    • Bills – If Buffalo can go into Foxborough and knock off the Patriots, their final game is against the Jets, giving them a slight chance to win the AFC East.
    • Texans – Houston travels to Tampa Bay, and if the Texans win there, they will clinch the AFC South and have at least the 4 seed.
    • Steelers – The Pittsburgh Steelers are the current 6 seed and have the Tennessee Titans forcing them to fight for their right to be in the playoffs.

Taking Care of Business

With the Chiefs defense coming together and playing really well, actually, they are playing better than I thought they would this year, and with Patrick Mahomes looking better this last game than he has looked all season, I believe this team is primed to run over some opponents and get to the promised land, or at least to the Super Bowl.
