The Marcus Peters trade is a catastrophe. Tornados and earthquakes and fires are usually associated with that word but, in sports terms, this trade… no matter what the compensation is… is an outright devastation to the franchise.
Devastation you ask? Take a look at the pictures below and you’ll get a graphic feel for how the loss of the leagues best CB will reek havoc on the future outlook and immediate ability to compete this year.
I had intended to write a piece on the Chiefs front seven this coming week but the emergence of this trade has made that idea meaningless in the face of seeing the Chiefs best defender leave via trade.
I heard one of the writers at the KC Star call this trade an act of cowardice and I’d have to agree. Unless we hear that Marcus Peters was found choking one of the coaches then the Chiefs must admit that they couldn’t handle the passion that Peters brings each and every day. If they say he’s un-coachable… you have to ask… does he really need coaching? On a defense that was ranked close to the bottom of the league (29th) vs. the pass, to have a CB who can shut down one side of the field and has done so for the past three seasons… once again… does he really need coaching?
Here’s a list of the Chiefs 2018 Free Agents:
While I love David Bell’s idea of bringing Bennie Logan back to play Defensive End… not Nose Tackle… it’s hard to find anyone else on this Free Agent list that I think is going to make a difference in 2018. There’s no one there who can help at Left Cornerback for sure.
So, the Chiefs are re-building their roster eh? They either are, or they aren’t. If this is just a re-building year, then we can expect to see other players dumped, right? Maybe Justin Houston. Maybe Eric Berry. However, if it’s just a minor adjustment to the roster… well… it isn’t. Getting rid of a player that can dominate in the defensive backfield is a form of football Hare kari. Insert knife, turn and twist. It’s essentially suicide any way you look at it.
“The Chiefs brass better have a good reason for this.” That’s what I kept saying all day long yesterday. However, the more I think about it… there is no “good reason” unless Peters has threatened the club owner to his face.
Speaking of suicide… the Chiefs organization is committing advertising suicide by prolonging the release of the terms of this trade. It’s as if they’re thinking… fans will show up at Arrowhead no matter who we put out there on the field. I’ve been around long enough to recall when players played with one team their whole career and the team’s identity was closely tied to those players. Now… it’s like elementary school every year at recess when they begin to choose up sides for a basketball game. It’s virtually a completely different team every time out for recess.
While I’m a big Brett Veach fan and love a lot of the moves he’s made to make the Chiefs better in his short tenure… look how the team has changed this offseason: no more QB Alex Smith (5 year face of the franchise) and now… no more All-Pro CB Marcus Peters. There’s a difference between re-building your team… and decimating your team. How did the team go from having an “elite” secondary to being riddled with holes in the short span of a week? That’s what happens when you dump a potential Hall of Famer at one of the 3 most critical positions on the field.
I posted this yesterday but I want you to take a look at the holes in the defense seen in the graphic above… then figure out how the Chiefs are going to fill all those holes with anyone near to the play-maker that Marcus Peters was/is? Not from the draft and not from the Free Agent list either, right?
