Match-up Armageddon: Chiefs Elysium

Everyone wants to know if De’Anthony Thomas will make the team now that Tyreek Hill is flashing his smile in red and gold and his skills on the field. However, isn’t there a possibility that the reason the Chiefs are taking both DAT and REEK to camp is that they intend on keeping the both of them? And maybe, just maybe, there’s a good reason for that.

Andy Reid likes to play the “Match-up Game.” No, not like Catching Kelce. Reid likes… no, loves… to get defenses that his team is facing, in awkward situations so he can take advantage of them. Ew… sounds like a bad high school date.

Actually, it’s so much better than that. Many are aware of how Reid uses his tight ends to create mismatches. Well, this draft, and offseason, may have helped Andy develop his little discombobulation intoxications addiction (you should know by now that there are good addictions and there are bad addictions… and this one is very, very good).

Can you imagine the mismatches that Andy could fashion if he kept both Tyreek Hill AND De’Anthony Thomas? Let’s take a moment to gather our senses and meditate over the pure unadulterated Hogwarts school of mismatch wizardry magic that Brad (Childress) and Andy (Reid) and Matt (Nagy) could be contemplating. We’ll call this trio BAM… this offense needs some magic BAM!

You’ve heard of the “Go Route” in which a wide receiver just flat out runs straight down the field using his speed to get separation?  With the Chiefs lining up Tyreek Hill, Jeremy Maclin, Chris Conley, De’Anthony Thomas… and Jamaal Charles in the slot… you would have a “GO-GO-GO-GO Route” (or something like that). And when I say “route”… I mean, the game would turn into a route. Just think, Jeremy Maclin would be the slowest of the bunch and he runs between a 4.33 and a 4.43 40 yard dash.

Now, tell me, who’s going to match up against that? Tell me.

To me, keeping both Tyreek Hill and De’Anthony Thomas could be a match-up Armageddon for other teams, plus an Elysian fields for the Chiefs… and Andy’s handy Sunday smorgasbord.

So, here’s your smorgasbord challenge: use this web site → a route tree (I like this one), and then use the following list of running backs, tight ends and wide receivers to make up your ideal set of routes and player combos. Then tell us what ya came up with. Like… what if half of our receivers (mentioned above) run a “Go Route” while the other half run a a “Drive” or “Drag” route. Oh the bodies would be flying.

Enjoy!
