The Meaning of the David Amerson Signing

Rookie General Manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, Brett Veach, was at it again on Friday signing CB David Amerson. Here’s Terez Paylor for the K.C. Star,

“[David] Amerson signed a one-year deal with a $2.25 million base salary and escalating incentives, a source told The Star. The deal could be worth up to $6 million, according to NFL Network.”

My oh my… isn’t it great to have the Chiefs secondary called “stellar?” While we should all tip our hats to Mr. Veach, there are a number of reasons for this signing. Here are the REASONS:

1. The 2-for-2 Reason– HC Andy Reid made it clear that Bob Sutton was not the problem in 2017… which most likely means that he believes the real problem with the defense was poor coverage. After all, they just traded away their stellar starting QB last week for one of the better CBs in the league. So, two CBs in two weeks… signals that they think, CBs were a big problem last year.

2. The Hedging Their Bets Reason– I know that Chiefs fans don’t want to hear this… it was horrifying for me to listen to… but yesterday Mike Florio of NBC Sports was discussing the different alternatives for what the Washington Redskins might do with Kirk Cousins and he said that if Cousins signs the Transition Tender… a $34.5M commitment by the Redskins… so Florio asks what would they do then because Cousins would essentially be forcing their hand to either trade him or swallow his salary… in which case Florio surmises that the Redskins might back out of the deal for Smith. If you want a clearer picture of what Florio has stated go here. Most people don’t think the Redskins will do that because they’ll essentially become a trade partner pariah in the NFL. I’m not counting my chickens… until March 14th.

3. The Big “Po” Reason– David Amerson has “Potential.” In 2015, he tied with Marcus Peters for the most passes defensed in the National Football League. One of the Chiefs coaching strengths is their DB coaches so I’m sure they’re believing their coaches can get him back to where he once belonged (Get Back Loretta).

4. The 70% Solution Reason– since the Chiefs play 70% of the time in the Nickel package, when they do they can drop Kendall Fuller into the slot — his strength — and use Amerson at LCB opposite Marcus Peters. It’s likely he’ll rotate their with Terrance Mitchell who does better when playing a part time role. It makes Phillip Gaines presence far less needed… thank God.

5. The Robin Hood Reason– by essentially robbing the division rival Raiders (who let Amerson go) and adding him to the Chiefs roster… they’re basically robbing the rich to benefit the poor… oh wait, I’m not sure this analogy works. Anyway, you get what I mean. I hope.

6. The Brett Veach Does Value Reason– by getting Amerson to sign a one-year deal for $2.25M (with incentives) he’s basically getting a 2nd round pick (in 2013) for peanuts… especially if he turns out to be excellent and earns his contract’s incentive limits of $6M.

7. The Draft Gamblers Bluff Reason– prior to two weeks ago, the Chiefs had a huge hole in their secondary and if the draft had happened then… Veach would be sitting at the GM’s Poker Table and even his best poker face would not hide the fact that he had a huge hole in his secondary. Consequently, teams and their GMs would try to acquire CBs right before the Chiefs select. Now… there’s no telling who the Chiefs might draft. This is a Dorsey trick (who knows, maybe it’s a Reid trick too)… to fill as many holes in your roster PRIOR to the draft so as to not allow other teams to gain a peek at your cards. It also allows Mr. Veach to use the BPA… as much as possible… or as “appearances” allow.

David Amerson can be a very good CB if he’s healthy. He sprained his foot in a game vs. the Chiefs in their October 19th game. He then didn’t play after the 7th game of the season with a foot sprain and shoulder injuries to blame. Now, he should be rested and healed. He was the Raiders best corner to that point in the season, but that wasn’t saying much.  However, when he’s healthy and focused, he can be very good as Seth Keysor notes:

So, do you have a reason for this signing? I was hoping the Chiefs would take a look at him when he was released.
