Mock Mondays:
A Simple Trade Back
by David Bell | April 1st, 2019
My attempt to trade up to get Clelin Ferrell failed but, Deven Bush dropped into my lap at 29. So… I didn’t get out of the first round pick usage. I then was able trade back for avery strong draft using one of my 2nd round picks to get 3-1 and 4-1. We get a top ILB for 10 years in Bush, and as you know, I am very worried about ILBs.
So I traded back in the 2nd round and clearly got a lot in doing so. Bradbury as Guard (makes Erving a Swing OL) and he can also play center but, I plan to strengthen the OL, and believe Reiter is a success already (2nd best ranking on the OL in 2018). Which gives me depth in two others, Murray and… (Ryan Hunter?)… can’t recall his name but was on the IR to end the year in 2018. Also we have Andrew Wylie and he can be a Swing Tackle. Tejan Koroma was the young guy that looked good, ended up on the IR. He will be back and make the roster… perhaps. We also brought in Wester for a visit and that guy looks like he might be a good addition to the OL Mix. I could have gone OT with the 2nd round pick but I feel pretty strongly about Bradbury as being the perfect type of fit for the Chiefs, character wise as well. Lock him in as a starting LG. We only gain by his addition and we strengthen the OL as noted.
Gardner-Johnson, a top FS, solves the back end exposure. I rank him higher than most do on when I read the pundits. I think KC will discover why and that gives us Mathieu, Watts, G-J, Lucas and Sorensen. That is a strong room for the defense.
Sternberger gives me a TE who is going to succeed to a high level in the NFL. KElce, Sternberger, Yeldon and Wells is a strong group for TE.
Then I am getting the 4th round pick from my trade back and I get a DE for the mix(he fell i this particular draft). I think Bryant is undervalued with these games and is a 3rd round pick maybe 2nd. But he gives me fill since I missed on Ferguson and Ferrell. DT was a late pick but Russell adds to the mix.
Fields and Hester add to my CB crew. I didn’t not get any of my personal targets but I think both will be successful in the NFL. Maybe not out of the gate. we’ll see. Both are probably undervalued but I see that with Fuller, Breeland, Ward, and one of these players plus Smith, we have a lot more with depth in the secondary and both drafted CBs should make the roster. Smith gets his opportunity to prove out. I believe Ward did already but you have doubters out there.
Next note on this is, I now watch CB Keith Reaser again today. Veach? Get his butt on board!
Last rounds I add a DT (Russell) and RB (Anderson). Who knows. All in all I felt very good about this draft, which also feels realistic in that I drafted to offense and Defense both. I firmly believe Robinson and Pringle will do fine as 3rd-and-4th WRs and believe both are more capable should the need arise. I am concerned about Hill but we could weather a potential suspension of it is not a full season and if he had lied to staff he would already be gone. Not going to draft a WR unless I must. Oh. WR… we have Gehrig Dieter also. I am good with this unless total disaster strikes. and still have more in the fold(Kemp and Crockett for example).
Here it is with the logic of why i chose what I did… David Bell
