New Chiefs News: Here it Comes… Almost Here… Not Yet

Today, I was struck with a need to review the past and then along came “Old Time Football” tweets. God love em! They produced several film segments of the Chiefs victory in the Super Bowl IV, January 11th, 1970. I recall that time… and the game… and the parade downtown as if it were a flashback. So, I am time-warped into that period, that stadium, that triumph… when my Chiefs fandom was solidified for life.

.

I still appreciate Head Coach Hank Stram and feature some of his antics on the sideline.

While we’re rounding out the wait for Camp Training, 2021: enough old time stuff for now.

Proposed Trade for K’Neal Harry

Don’t get me wrong, he does fit the Veach’s Profile for obtaining former #1 draft picks and getting them to Arrowhead. However, it ain’t happening. The Chiefs WR talent pool is very strong and very deep. If they had a need, he could fit.

.

The Chiefs do not have a need at WR. There’s going to be tremendous competition for the WR #2 role and if that adds #3 as a possession WR by committee, then that’s the way it rolls. Please note that the Chiefs roster has several players that will compete for a roster spot. The group is deep enough with plenty of Chiefs WRs with experience which allows them to go 7-deep if need be, and Andy Reid would not bat an eye.

Wide Receivers – Fun Stuff

Hill, Hardman, Robinson, Pringle, Calloway, Kemp, Shepherd, Dieter, Powell, Ffrench, Fortson… and then some. All of these players, save Callaway, Shepherd and Powell, have previous time with the team. It’s really time for Hardman, Robinson and Pringle to fulfill their promise. They have the time with the team, playbook, routes, and the QB throwing the ball.

.

Among These WRs, Who Breaks In?

The clear answer is –> Cornell Powell. A rookie with greater participation after the fist half of the season, he should make his mark later in the season.

.

Today’s Question: If Veach were to make one trade, or Free Agent signing, before training camp, what position would it be for?

.

My answer is –> a veteran DE or a veteran CB.

.

DE Melvin Ingram is still my favorite martian… er… target, for the edge. I haven’t picked a player for CB. They both will likely stand pat until the roster cuts are made before “Alchemy Day”, as Laddie so aptly identified it – a cut from another team, paring down or perhaps earlier with a Free Agent still pending because something shows up in camp that tells them they must make a move.

.

A couple of days ago, AO blogger, Priest-Maholmes, asked: “How, is Brian Poole not a Chief?” to which I would concur. Poole would be a wonderful addition.

.

Corollary Question: If you had a player to acquire, which position and who would your Target be?

.

Breakout Player of Year?

Who is going to have a breakout season in 2021. Will there be more than one? For me, the answer is –> LB Willie Gay, Jr.. Also think LB Nick Bolton will break into the league and play very good football and both of them will help Anthony Hitchens play consistently better football.

.

Is there to be another Breakout player?

–> And then there’s Clyde!

I’m feeling very positive about the upcoming season for CEH. He is going to breakthrough both on the ground and as a receiver. Yep, Clyde will gain 1200+ and with possibly up to 650 receiving yards as well.

.

The Hitch in the Chiefs Giddyup?

People are saying Anthony Hitchens, the Chiefs defensive field commander for the front seven had an improved season in 2020, but that’s not true, at least not until the last few games. I did note that something had changed and he did play some good football for the last quarter of the season. Realistically, Hitchens is the play-caller and the coaching staff still depends upon him for that vital role. So, why would they cut him this offseason?

.

If his play in 2021 ascends to how it was at the end of 2020? Then the Chiefs will be able to field 4 linebackers who feature the basics. Who is the other? They will depend on Ben Niemann. I do think Darius Harris — a 2019 UDFA out of Middle Tennessee State — will have a good shot at making it into the mix. I also like Omari Cobb — a 2020 UDFA out of Marshall — and he’ll will have a good shot at it too.

.

Will Three Rookie Offensive Lineman Start?

I saw that post out there and earlier I projected that Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith and Lucas Niang could well all be starters this season. I am pretty certain about Humphrey, but logic… and refraining from over-exuberance… tells me that Smith and Niang will get a slow break-in time while sitting behind a veteran, in each case.

.

Safeties in the Rear

I really love our accumulation of Safeties, led by Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill. I see that the addition of Will Parks is a boost to the group and this provides a way for Dan Sorensen to be the versatile player in spots where needed.

.

I am sure there will be some new Chiefs news coming… “Buts” those things haven’t happened “yet”… but they’re going to!
