NFL Defense: It’s All About Chris Jones

Laddie Morse

Chris Jones has had one heck of an offseason. It’s almost as if he’s taking lessons from Travis Kelce and he now leads a very public life. You might have thought that the defensive season was all about LJ (L’Jarius Sneed) but nope, it was all about CJ. From the time the Super Bowl took place until now, CJ has made headlines for what seems like every single day. It all began with HC Andy Reid jumping on top of him right of the the SB Win.

Later that same day, in the locker room, Mahomes was saying to Jones, “We ain’t done yet.”

On the Super Bowl stage afterwards Patrick Mahomes could be heard saying “Hey bro, you ain’t goin’ no where.”

A couple of days later, Chris Jones screamed at the top of his lungs on the stage following the Parade, “I ain’t goin’ nowhere baby.” (1:03)

OF course the Chiefs didn’t sign Chris Jones right away. That didn’t happen until March 11. Jones singed a five-year deal worth $158.75 M with $101 M in guarantees, edging out Aaron Donald as the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle. The funny thing is, about four days later… Aaron Donald retired. There’s an article by Jordan Foote for si.com called: “Chris Jones Ranked as NFL’s Best Interior Defender for 2024” in which he says:

Jones is not only the NFL’s top interior lineman, but his contract made him the highest paid defensive tackle in the history of the game. That’s pretty heady stuff.

More recently, Chris Jones was talking about Training Camp and possibly sitting out some of it. Cole DeRuse picked up on the idea that CJ was joking when he said that:

Just a day prior to the time Chris Jones singed his monster deal Pete Grathoff published a piece for the Kansas City Start called: “Super Bowl video shows Patrick Mahomes tell Chris Jones he wouldn’t leave Chiefs” in which he noted that Jones had gone completely the other way from the NFL (Chiefs) Players who had given Clark Hunt an F- saying he needed to improve the facility:

Of course CJ may have had an inclination that Hunt was about to give him the biggest deal ever handed out to a DT.

Jones foree into the public domain didn’t stop there of course. In an article by Pete Grathoff for the Kansas City Star called: “KC Chiefs’ Chris Jones loved seeing Travis Kelce on stage with Taylor Swift.” Grathoff goes on to quote CJ as saying:

So, CJ stepped into the ever so popular mess of Swifties gone wild.

In the meantime, we have a season coming up which begins with a Training camp in less than one months time.

What do you think?
