NFL Draft: A First Round Projection and OPEN THREAD – Christmas for NFL teams has finally arrived. Before we get to that, because: 1) Chiefs fans will have the longest to wait until they make a pick, and 2) because David Bell and I decided to create a full bore first round mock… we present to you our “First Round Projection“. Sure, we were having a ME-ME-ME Generational motivation moment, of course… but you see, we not only love our Chiefs, we wanted to be able to predict who the Chiefs might be selecting when they pick at #32. Take a look below and you will see, we have it all figured out.
1. Cincinnati Bengals – Joe Burrow, QB
An obvious choice. If they don’t select Burrow they may as well pack it in.
2. Washington Redskins – Chase Young, Edge
The best player in this draft has to wait 15 extra minutes to hear his named called. Washington… Enter the Young.
3. Detroit Lions – Jeffrey Okudah, CB
If Lions don’t go Okudah, could a team trade up for Simmons? Okudah is the Barracuda of CBs!
4. New York Giants – Tristan Wirfs, OT
One of the 4 best Offensive Tackles on the board. They will most certainly all be gone by pick #20 if not earlier..
5. Miami Dolphins – Tua Tagovailoa, QB
Alabama HC Nick Saban did a break down on Tua Tagovailoa’s tape on ESPN Detail and I’m now leaning toward him being the best QB in this draft. Enough to say: two years from now when we’ll do a re-draft of the 2020 draft, Tua will come out on top and we’ll all be laughing that he was considered a risky pick.
6. Los Angeles Chargers – Justin Herbert, QB
Tua/Herbert or Herbert/Tua… Tua/Herbert or Herbert/Tua… ad nauseum… take your choice…….
7. Carolina Panthers – Isaiah Simmons, LB
Can the “unicorn/alien” fall any further? Nay, I say, nay. Saw him interviewed this week and he said these were the strangest things he’s been called. I’ll stick with “freak.”
8. Arizona Cards – Jedrick Wills, OT
If you think the young Sophomore HC isn’t going protect his Sophomore QB, you cray, cray.
9. Jacksonville Jags – Javon Kinlaw, DT
The best Interior Lineman for a team needing the best Interior Lineman. It’s really a matter of who the Jags staff likes better, Kinlaw or Derrick Brown.
10. Cleveland Browns – Mekhi Becton, OT
Second of the 4 best Offensive Tackles graded similarly by both David Bell and I
11. New York Jets – CeeDee Lamb, WR
QB Sam Darnold needs a deep threat, field stretcher. Lamb gives him that and more.
12. Las Vegas Raiders – Henry Ruggs III, WR
Gruden wants a Tyreek Hill of a WR on his team. (Shhh, there is no other cheetah).
13. San Francisco 49ers – CJ Henderson, CB
49ers get the DB help they need early. They get a darned good one too.
14. Tampa Bay Bucs – Andrew Thomas, OT
If you can’t rely on your new coach to protect your old goat…. who’s going to do the job?
Goats in the belfry and goats in the hall
Goats sniffing glue, and riding on the ball.
Goats in my pajamas, goats outside in the rough.
Goats everywhere but the barn, sure enough.
15. Denver Broncos – Jerry Jeudy, WR
Broncos want a cheetah… but Elway settles for a boy named Jeudy.
16. Atlanta Falcons – Trevon Diggs, CB
Falcons need a corner so that’s what they get. I can dig it, he can dig it, she can dig it, we can dig it, they can dig it, you can dig it, oh, let’s dig it, can you dig it, baby?
17. Dallas Cowboys – Kristian Fulton CB
Cowboys need to corner another corner too. Onward Kristian soldiers.
18. Mimai Dolphins – Josh Jones, OT
Need to protect their new QB in the future. If the Dolphins do take Tua, they need to let him sit for a year and get truly healthy while Fitz shows him the ropes, ala, Alex for Patrick.
19. Las Vegas Raiders – AJ Terrell, CB
Shapes up a shoddy D backfield in Vegas… if that is a possibility of a thing.
20. Jacksonville Jags – Xavier McKinney, S
Fills a great need. They get the best Safety around.
21. Philadelphia Eagles – Tee Higgins, WR
We like Higgins, for Doug Pederson and Carson Wentz. Say thank you, bow slowly, then sit.
22. Minnesota Vikings – Antoine Winfield II, S/CB
Historical sense and sensibility (father was a Viking great) and he can play both positions.
23. New England Patriots – Jordan Love, QB
Are convinced BB thinks he can turn water into wine and that this is what he did with Brady, so… he might go QB late in the draft but, if Love is in the air….
24. New Orleans Saints – Jalen Hurts, QB
Drew in his last two years? Jalen Hurts fits like a glove for a system that likes to throw the ball around the yard.
25. Minnesota Vikings – Laviska Shenault, WR
Replacement for Stefon Diggs. Cousins needs a good WR, and Shenault could be great.
26. Miami Dolphins – Grant Delpit, S
To replace the departed Minkah Fitzpatrick. Delpit could be the answer.
27. Seattle Seahawks – K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge
Clean up Pete Carroll’s DL mess now that Clowney has left town and he shipped Clark to K.C..
28. Baltimore Ravens – Patrick Queen, LB
It hurts but, we gave the best true linebacker to the Baltimore Ravens.
29. Tennessee Titans – Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge
Need an Edge Rusher? Who ya gonna call? Gross-Matos! A need filled.
30. Green Bay Packers – Justin Jefferson, WR
The best WR left on the board for Aaron Rodgers. The Pack will wait a few years to draft his replacement.
31. San Francisco 49ers – Brandon Aiyuk, WR
Deebo Samuels and Brandon Aiyuk working together will help them a lot. Drats!
32. Kansas City Chiefs – Kenneth Murray, LB
This would be a Godsend for Spagnuolo, the Chiefs, the fans, and humanity.
David and I think the first hot spot for a trade will appear around pick #4 and then again at #7, with the Giants and the Panthers, respectively. We also feel that the Raiders head coach, Jon Gruden, is motivated to get his own version of Patrick Mahomes so, a trade up could happen involving the Raiders at #12. Who that might be with, is anyone’s guess but, Gruden just doesn’t appear to be completely a happy camper when it comes to his QB Derek Carr.
An accounting of the past few drafts showed there were trades involving these picks:
*Chiefs trade up for Patrick Mahomes II
The number of trades is significant and so one would conclude that David and I will be wrong about one-third of the time just because of the number of trades that will take place. Oh well, at least we’ll be right the rest of the time.
My prediction is… we’ll get 5 picks right out of 32. Anyone want to take the over/under on that?
You may have guessed it right that David Bell and I are hoping that Oklahoma LB Kenneth Murray falls into the Chiefs lap. It’ll probably take some divine intervention but hey, we can hope and pray, right?! Is there anyone you’re hoping for most?
