No Idea What Is Going On Here

So, Pro Bowl is over, yawn. Super Bowl is coming up, yawn (we already beat both of them). What to talk about? How about we talk about coaching changes this week?

Shuffle The Deck and Serve Up The Same Old Thing

  • Mike Kafka to Quarterbacks Coach
  • Mark DeLeone to Inside Linebackers Coach
  • Mike Smith to Outside Linebackers Coach
  • Corey Matthaei to Assistant Offensive Line Coach
  • Joe Bleymaier to Pass Game Analyst/Assistant Quarterbacks Coach
  • Terry Bradden to Defensive Quality Control Coach

Not much going on here.

New Blood

  • Jay Valai (defense), Quality Control Coach
  • David Girardi (offense), Quality Control Coach

Really not a big deal on these guys.

See Ya, Wouldn’t Want To Be Ya

  • Assistant Head Coach Brad Childress will retire
  • Special Projects Coach Tommy Brasher will retire
  • Linebackers Coach Gary Gibbs will not be “pursuing other opportunities”

Obviously, there is a lot of change at Arrowhead. We are going into 2018 with a whole new attitude and philosophy. After this season, I am of the mind that the issues are on the coaching level. There is a LOT of talent on the team. There are aged players, rookies, and in between.  But, every team has that issue.

Based upon the rules of the league, every team will have this issue going forward. The key is to play the game. How to construct a team to deal with this issue and to call the plays to make them successful.

We don’t seem to do that in any form of an on-going basis. We play to not lose, but then lose the big ones.

Hmm, Seems Something is Missing

Besides the need for Andy Reid to permanently fire himself as Offensive Coordinator, there is one glaring miss here.

Why hasn’t Bob Sutton been fired? This is totally bizarre. It is one of those things that seems to be incomprehensible. I certainly can’t find a good reason to retain him. While there has been the occasional game that looked like he pulled the rabbit form the hat and won the game.  However, it seems there are many more where the game was all but won and he went into hermit mode, played prevent, and gave up too many yards and points. This happened at all of the wrong times you can imagine.

Instead of firing him, we have retained him. I have no idea how this can possibly be justified. His defense has repeatedly given up the points when they mattered. It has gone into turtle mode almost every game. Some of the players lack discipline.

Looking Ahead to 2018

All I see is more of the same. Shuffle the deck of cards, but it is still the same 52 cards. We are all set to win 10-12 games and then lose our first or second game of the playoffs. It is more of what we have already experienced. Not much to see going forward.

How do we have the seasons we have had recently and not demand improvement? How do we let so much talent go untapped? Why do we let such an obvious weakness go without addressing it?

Until next week, there’s The Rub!
