And they are contests and now we know the mete and measure of what will be faced. What is it that we are seeking until we know all the personnel are selected and aligned in the field opposite their counterparts? Assurances? Promise of victory after victory?
Each of us has addressed ourselves to orient to the needs of a team which has weaknesses and we know what those are. We know that the Chiefs don’t have the power of a first round pick and that any opportunity to succeed in filling gaps must of necessity, come from the draft. This itself is not a problem when considering the nature of ranking talent: by the various GM’s, their scouting crew with the advice and consent of man who will mount the weekly campaigns for 17 weeks. Round One picks do not insure success.
Rumors of a Good Harvest
If one were to examine the needs of the starting players and where the major weaknesses exist, then we know that if a needs based draft board were constructed, that the Chiefs would be able to add high caliber talent to fill those gaps. Several comments were made this week about the primary needs but among them we can surely list the defense as having the greatest need and the positions that truly must be addressed would include: FS, DT, CB, OLB, maybe an ILB to add to the mix of talent that has already been assembled by a rookie GM – Brett Veach. The Scouts will have done their due diligence. They have been traveling as Veach noted, to get all the leg work in. Sometime, perhaps by Monday night, the Head Coach, Andy Reid and Veach will meet to go over all the picks as they are set up… at least as I recall, that was the timing of things when Dorsey was GM.
But Harvest occurs in the fall not the spring and here in the mountain west, spring still has night time temps above freezing but below 40 over night. Warm meadows, tulips and May flowers are yet to be displayed. The first contest that will decide the 2018 outcome are merely wisps and tendrils of a smokey veil that has yet to clear… it is the mystery that has us all attending to one length or another, the current Chief’s roster and what potential additions will be able to impact the season as new starting players, or players who provide significant depth.
One thing that I am able to observe: there a many good players available to the Chiefs in rounds 2-4. That is good news. The difficulty? Picking the right good players and that depends on the scouting staff. Too, recall that 3 scouts joined John Dorsey in Cleveland.
