Oh, Give Me Mahomes, Sweet Mahomes

Oh, Give Me Mahomes, Sweet Mahomes – I never worried before the game. I never worried during the game. More importantly, I’m not worried after the game. I’m certainly not worried about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their geriatric quarterback, but, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s talk about the amazing win we just witnessed over the Buffalo Bills last night: 38-to-24.

Here’s the part where I wax poetically about how the Chiefs overcame a nine-point deficit and withstood a nine-point fourth-quarter onslaught to still win the game by a mere… let me check my notes… fourteen points. Were it not for the lucky score in the first half because of Mecole Hardman’s unfortunate faux pas on the (non) punt return and nine garbage-time Bills points in the fourth quarter, the score would have been 38-9, in favor of our Chiefs.

The Chiefs dominated every aspect of the AFC Championship game: offensively, defensively, and on special teams.

On the offense, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was good on 29 of 38 passes, for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Did I mention he had no interceptions? That, along with a 127.6 passer rating, 439 yards total offensive yards and five touchdowns were pretty pivotal, too.

Tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill caught a combined 22 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns. They’re the best wide receiving duo (even though Kelce is a TE) in the NFL. Fellow WR, Hardman, redeemed himself with a touchdown reception and a 50-yard run. Buffalo’s defense had no answer for the onslaught of offensive weapons unleashed by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

On defense, the Chiefs intercepted Bills quarterback Josh Allen once, sacked him four times for 53 yards, and held him to a single touchdown pass. By game’s end, Allen’s passer rating was 80.8.

Clark, Chiefs defensive end, silenced the “Where’s Frank?” crowd with three tackles (two solo, two for a loss), two sacks, and two quarterback hits. Defensive teammates Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward each had seven tackles and LB Anthony Hitchens led the Chiefs defense with eight.

Special teams play, minus the muffed kickoff return by Hardman (which he redeemed himself for), while not spectacular, was solid. Wide receiver/return specialist Byron Pringle looks ready for more responsibility after returning two kickoffs for 42 yards, total.

Stat of the Game

Travis Kelce has one-plus receiving touchdowns in three straight playoff games, the longest streak in Chiefs postseason history.

Although horrified and devastated by his kickoff drop that resulted in a touchdown, the young man, buoyed by the confidence of his quarterback, teammates, and coaches, rallied back to not only score a touchdown, but also burn the Bills for fifty yards on one slick rush.

Looking Ahead

Next up, we have Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV on February 7th. ‘Tis time to put the old man out of his misery and claim your throne, Mr. Mahomes!
