POEtic Justice, a 34-20 Win: 50 Years to the Day, Chiefs Pull Repeat

Recently, we started a, “Today In Chiefs History” snippet that some may have noticed in the sidebar of each ArrowheadOne article, appearing at the top on the right. Yesterday, it was that the Super Bowl IV Champion Chiefs beat the Baltimore Colts 44-24 on the second Monday Night football game ever, 50 years ago. I caught it while reading it in Price Carter’s excellent game thread, and was also reminded by longtime AO reader, Bert (chieflybrandt). The historical note?

“On this day in 1970 – In the second Monday Night Football game ever, the defending Super Bowl IV Kansas City Chiefs made their debut appearance on MNF, easily handling the Baltimore Colts in Baltimore, 44-24. Chiefs Hall-of-Fame safety Johnny Robinson nabbed three interceptions during the game.”

Do y’all smell something familiar (34-20)?

View From The Cheap Seats

I won’t lie. When the Ravens marched down the field on their first drive, I felt a bit scared and more than threatened. When the Chiefs defense held them to just three points on that first drive, my heart soared. While there were a few moments in the game when my brows furrowed — multiple times actually — I never fretted. Why would I? Not with “Showtime” Mahomes running the ship!

I don’t believe I’ve ever referred to Mr. Mahomes as “Showtime” since he’s been a Chief. Henceforth, I will. M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore may as well have been the Apollo in NYC… cause we had Showtime and no… despite Butt-kicker and D-Train… no SandMan. It was, despite a few scares, all Chiefs, all night!

The Chiefs trailed for only 2 minutes and 37 seconds in the first quarter. After that? All Chiefs. All day — even with the scares. K.C. got 29 1st downs compared to the Ravens 16. The Chiefs were 79% efficient on first downs, while the Ravens were a paltry 33%. K.C. netted 517 yards compared to Baltimore’s 228 yards. In short, Father’s Day is 264 days from now on Sunday, June 20, 2021…. but Jim Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson owe Chiefs HC Andy Reid and Mr. Showtime Father’s Day cards, respectively.

… And the Game Ball Goes To…

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. I doubt there’s been a better game plan yet this year. Big Red knew what he was facing, and the Chiefs feasted on Raven stew last night. Note: Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo was responsible for much of the prep work.

How’d I Do?

I called a Chiefs victory over a week ago by a score of 35-17. I was within five points on each side, and I did pick the winner. I’m not saying I’m exceptional. I don’t need to!

Looking Ahead

Has-been Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots visit Arrowhead Stadium this coming Sunday, October 4th Happy Birthday, Mom! In celebration of Mrs. Mary Holley’s birthday, the Chiefs will soundly defeat the Patriots, 49-to-24.

Parting Shot

The AFC belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs. Heck, the NFL belongs to the Chiefs. The rest of the league would do well to acknowledge such and show a modicum of respect. The Kansas City Chiefs are the real deal! That goes for these guys, especially:
