Preparation Is Key: Super Bowl Weekend Ramblings – I’m not sure which was slower, the 50 years since Chiefs last won the Super Bowl, or the two weeks we’ve had to wait for them to play in this one. This game has been dissected from every angle by national and local reporters. I have some thoughts of my own, but with this media overload in mind, I’ll keep them brief. Let us start with the thing that’s usually most important in this game of all games: food.
Super Bowl Food
Every fan has their favorite Super Bowl foods. In our household, Jalapeno Poppers are tradition. This year, I’ll be tying my hand at whiskey BBQ wings. A Velveeta-based Queso is always a crowd pleaser, and if you like deep frying and want to try something epic, go for Monte Cristo Sandwich bites. At the end of the day though, this will produce a lot of digestive distress. That’s why it’s key to have a fibrous vegetable that’s appealing enough to actually eat, when surrounded by its greasy, cheesy, delicious neighbors. Enter Sugar Snap peas. They’re sweet, crunchy, and require no preparation whatsoever. Do your stomach a solid and pick up a bag, before the game. You’ll be glad you did.
Extra Planning
When the Patriots play in the Super Bowl, and has happened entirely too much, of late, there’s plenty of time to dash off to the kitchen, between commercial breaks, and reload the old plate. With Patrick Mahomes on the field, you won’t want to miss a second. Since catching all the commercials is a revered tradition, do some extra planning. Set a food table up in your viewing area. This should allow you to refill in the short spaces between plays, without missing Mahomes heroics, or Post Malone drinking Bud Light Seltzer.
Attitude Adjustment
Despite being a generally mild mannered person, I have a tendency to wind up screaming at my television during Chiefs games. With friends over, and kids watching, this is something I’d like to avoid. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, try a mentality shift. Instead of watching, with the game solely in mind, root like a parent in the stands of a little league game. Cheer the team on as though they can hear every word. You wouldn’t cuss your kid out for dropping a ball, even if his name was Demarcus Robinson.
Savor The Moment
Chiefs fans desperately want this win, but, at the end of the day, just getting here is progress. Don’t stop believing… but do stop and smell the roses. Savor every moment of this journey. The end may be the sweetest piece, but it’s only one piece. In the last 10 years we’ve seen the Patriots in the Super Bowl 5 times, the Broncos twice, and the Ravens, Steelers, and Colts each once. This is Mahomes first appearance in the Super Bowl. I expect him to be back. Probably more than once, but the first one is always special. It’s worth slowing down to celebrate.
My Prediction
The Chiefs should defeat the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-27. The combination of Andy Reid, and Magic Mahomes, should prove too much, even for the league’s greatest defense. On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs own defense, is severely underrated nationally. Kyle Shanahan is a brilliant play-caller, but so is Steve Spagnuolo. If Juan Thornhill were healthy, I don’t think this game would be particularly close. As is, Chiefs will probably have to play a lot of cover 2, and the 49ers rushing attack will take advantage. At the end of the day, Spags crew should get just enough stops, especially in the Red Zone, to secure the win.
Conclusion
The Chiefs are ready to take care of business. You do the same. Set up a table in the family room, load it with delicious food, and don’t forget the Sugar Snap Peas. Savor every moment, with family and friends. Root hard for the team that you love. Be thankful. Expect a win, but respect getting in. Critique the commercials while Chiefs crush the competition. This is our moment. It’s been a long time coming, but it won’t be gone long. To the first of many Super Bowl appearances to come, and, hopefully, wins.
