Preseason Game Two Results: Chiefs 23, Lions 24

Another day, another preseason loss. Oh well, so close, but no cigar. The Detroit Lions came into Arrowhead Stadium and beat the Kansas City Chiefs on the last play of the game, with 2 seconds left on the clock by kicking a 43-yard field goal making it Lions 24, Chiefs 23.

What We Learned

Sometimes, team leaders will say, you learn more from a loss than you do a victory. I sure hope that’s the case because two losses in a row reminds me too much of the 2012 season when the Chiefs finished 2-and-14. There appeared to be way too many times that the Lions — their second and third teamers vs the Chiefs first and second teamers, no less — were able to complete passes over the middle of the field, at will.

Although the Lions had no rushers who had more than 40 yards on the ground, they still ended up with 346 yards through the air, and their main QB, Jared Goff, didn’t play at all. For a team (the Chiefs) that was supposed to offer a stiff defense against the pass, that’s not very good. Not at all.

Ben Niemann (yes, that Ben Niemann) was tied with three other Lions defenders with 5 tackles each while Chiefs CB Christian Roland-Wallace had 9 to lead all defenders in tackles. BTW, you don’t really want a DB to be the biggest tacker on your team.

We also learned that Cornell Powell still has it. In college he had a 80-yard catch and run TD. On Saturday, he had a 64-yard TD catch. A pass from Carson Wentz (0:17).

Patrick Mahomes

After losing the toss, Mahomes played the first two series of the game and the Chiefs came out on top in that time: 6-to-0 on two field goals. He led the offense on a 12-play drive for their second Field Goal, and that’s when I thought the Chiefs might leave him in because the Lions had fumbled the previous Kick Off and K.C. took over at the Detroit 25. The real disappointment came when the offense could only score a field goal instead of a TD.

Carson Wentz

I thought Reid might leave Mahomes in for one more drive but he came out, Carson Wentz took over and led the team to a 3-play drive capped by a 22-yard pass over the top to Xavier Worthy for his first ever NFL TD.

Chiefs 13 – Lions 0

Perhaps Bert said it best:

“Live by the field goal,

Die by the field goal.”

Although K.C. scored two TDs in this game, they also left points on the field by kicking three field goals. I’ve said it many times: Field Goals don’t get you the points that you want. That was especially true in this game. In the end, my response to Bert was, “I hope that’s not the theme of the Chiefs season.”

I hope. I hope. I hope.

For the Chiefs it was the pass from Carson Wentz to Xavier Worthy (0:13).

For the Lions, it was the 20-yard Punt Return near the end of the game by Isaiah Williams (0:20).

Player of the Game

Xavier Worthy not only had one run for 11 yards but three catches for 62 yards, a 20.7 average. Not only that but, Worthy have a long TD, with Mahomes throwing him a long pass for 39 yards as well (0:15), see below:
