After months of off-season purgatory, the first preseason game is almost here. This might not be real football, but it‘s close enough. Whether you’re just watching the game, or trying to analyze the roster, I’ve got some sizzling tips to enjoy your Friday night football.
Eat A Light Supper
If you’re like me, you’ll be pigging out during the game on delicious junk food like Jalapeno Poppers, Potato Chips and Monte Cristo Sandwiches (if you don’t know what those are, you’ve got to make some, they are amazing, I usually deep fry them and dip them in raspberry jam). You don’t want to be doing that with a stomach that’s already over-stuffed with brisket or ribs. Especially if a carbonated beverage (pop or beer) is in your future. That’s a recipe for hic-ups, and you don’t need that kind of distraction while you’re evaluating talent my friend. Go light on the supper, heavy on the snacks, and GO CHIEFS!
Print Out A Roster Chart
Preseason announcers tend to take the game a lot less seriously than the avid fan. They’re prone to ramble on about whatever inane material they prepared for the broadcast, while some rookie, whose name you can’t read, is beasting-out. Don’t get angry, get a look at your handy dandy chart and you’ll know who he is. Keep in mind, some players share numbers in preseason, but those players are always on opposite sides of the ball. Don’t be the guy who asks why Chiefs are trying Kareem Hunt at CB. It’s Kenneth Acker. The roster chart is your friend, it makes you look smart, or at least keeps you from looking stupid. You can copy and paste the info from the web page and print it, or you can just right click on the page and hit print. Make sure to only print the first three pages though, the rest are just ads and junk.
Set Your DVR to Record
I want to get a good look at a number of players: #81 Seantavius Jones, #70 Bryan Witzmann, and #44 Earl Okine, to name a few, but I won’t be able to get a good look at every player during the game. If you have a DVR though, you can re-watch the game later to catch some plays you might have missed. Alternatively, you can subscribe to the NFL’s streaming service at nfl.com/gamepass.
Beware of The Hype
You can never take anything from an NFL preseason game, except the performance of individual players. Offense and defense both play very vanilla schemes and coaches are more concerned with producing usable game tape than winning. What’s more, the Chiefs will be playing the San Francisco 49ers, the 2nd worst team in the NFL in 2016. Last year they ranked 31st in team total offense and 32nd in team total defense. If the Chiefs steamroll them, it doesn’t mean much. On the flip-side, the Niners might need to give their starters more reps in preseason. That could lead to a situation where Chiefs’ 2nd or 3rd stringers are facing first string opponents. Good or bad, the final score of this game won’t mean anything.
Relax and Enjoy The Game
This might seem like a silly thing to say, but for the rabid fanalyst (fan analyst) it can be easy to get so caught up in watching the players that you miss the experience of the game. Even if the final score isn’t important, you should still allow yourself to invest emotionally in the outcome. This is the first football in a long time, don’t get so caught up in the X’s and O’s that you miss the joy of the game.
That’s it for me guys. What advice do you have for your fellow Chiefs fans? What are your traditional game snacks? Where do you go to watch the game? Let me know in the comments section. Go Chiefs!
Editor’s Note: If you’d like to know what the top Super Bowl snack in every state is, go to this link → “Most Popular SB Snack in Every State This Year” They said, for Missouri it’s a bowl of Chili and for Kansas it’s a S’Mores dessert? Hmm…. They also said Colorado is Queso Dip but I was certain it would be Brownies. One more thing, could someone please explain to me what in tarnation that is on the Illinois’ plate?
