Rose’s Ramblings: Bling, Rings, and Other Intriguing Things – Welcome, ArrowheadOne readers. Grab a cup of java, settle into a comfy chair, and — try to — enjoy the ride. ArrowheadOne Editor-in-Chief has seen fit for me to pilot the ArrowheadOne Express this morning and guide you on today’s journey through Chiefs Kingdom with all the twists and turns that entails. Buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Football is Almost Here!

It’s hard to believe that we’re but a week away (7 days, just thought you might have forgotten that there are 7 days in a week) from our Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs (we get to say that all year, guys!) stomping the Houston Texans in a home opener at Arrowhead Stadium to kick off the 2020 NFL season.

I have to admit that I had my doubts and misgivings about there even being a season this year with COVID-19 running rampant in our nation. However, the NFL did their homework and found a way to make it happen. Give much credit to our own head coach Andy Reid in helping to make this possible.

I don’t think I’ve been this excited about the start of a season since Joe Montana was under center, and Marcus Allen was in the backfield as Chiefs, for the first time, over twenty-five years ago. Next Thursday can’t come quick enough.

That’s Got A “Ring” To It

On Tuesday of this week, the entire Chiefs organization — players, coaches, commentators — all received their Super Bowl LIV Championship rings. The rings are as star-studded as are the 2019 — and 2020 — Chiefs themselves. The ceremony, held at Arrowhead Stadium, seemed weird, initially, due to the social-distancing, which our country’s current circumstances dictate. Upon reflection, that made it that much more special. Chiefs Kingdom celebrated with our players, at home, on YouTube, and on Facebook. Captured was emotion and elation, shared with die-hard fans who stood by this organization through too many losing and heartbreaking seasons to count (50, that’s right, I counted them… and I know you did too). Why, we even got to see Dustin Colquitt come back home for his well-earned hardware!

The design of the ring drips the absolute class of the Chiefs organization. While I won’t go into too much detail, Adam Schefter’s tweet and graphic does it for me. These are the idiosyncrasies of the Chiefs Super Bowl LIV Championship rings that struck me as noteworthy:

• The “L.H.” in remembrance of AFL and Chiefs founder, Lamar Hunt, lets Chiefs fan and player, alike, know what representing the Red and Gold truly means.
• The “Chiefs Kingdom” on the side acknowledges the city of Kansas City and the Chiefs fans for their steadfast support over the years.
• The 142.2 decibel rating signifying Arrowhead Stadium as the loudest in the world, again acknowledging their faithful fans on the side.
• Not one to forget the vanquished, the Texans, the Titans, and the 49ers logos appear — alongside the postseason scores — on the inside of the rings. I’m sure this is especially meaningful to the Texans and Titans. It features their logos on a Super Bowl ring for the first time in their histories. Maybe in 10-15 years, when Mahomes retires, they can earn their own!

It Don’t Mean A Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Bling!

Just hours after receiving his Super Bowl LIV Championship ring, our SB MVP, made it official and outdid his SB Championship ring with even better bling to his soulmate, Miss Brittany Lynne Matthews.

I’m not one to yell, “I knew it!” when I’m right. Who am I kidding, I’m so the one to do that!

Over three decades before the Chiefs, the Kansas City Cowboys and the Kansas City Blues graced the gridirons of the city of Red & Gold during the roaring twenties of last century. Football fanatic and history buff I am, rest assured, that I’ll revisit. Soon, but here’s a quick sneak peek.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It’s estimated that an average of 123 Americans per day die from suicide. They leave behind family and friends who struggle to cope with their loss. No one close to the victim comes away unscathed and they’re left in the dark, ashamed to open up and talk about their loss, due to feelings of shame and stigma. They are suicide loss survivors.

The added isolation, economic and emotional stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the problem. If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911 immediately.

Editor’s Note: since I spent 39 years working with children, I’m well aware of the abuse and/or neglect that can take place in homes. Also because of the Covid-19 pandemic, many kids are stranded at home with someone who might abuse or neglect them. Please call this number if you suspect a problem for any child you know: 1-800-392-3738 (Missouri) and 1-800-422-4453 (Nationally). I’ve had to call before so I understand how hard that is… but a child’s future may be at stake.

“Chiefs Fan of the Week“

Me. Yes, me! I’m the Chiefs Fan of the Week. Earlier this year, Mrs. Rose gifted me with a pair of Kansas City Chiefs tennis shoes. Because of the pandemic and lockdown, I’ve not yet worn them. Come next Thursday evening, as the Chiefs wrangle the Texans, rest assured, I’ll be kickin’ it!

The heaviest player to ever throw a touchdown pass is none other than ex-Chief DL Dontari Poe. The pass came in the waning minutes of a Christmas Day 2016 blowout of the Denver Broncos (33-10). The 346-lb. Poe etched his name in the record books with a two-yard pass to TE Demetrius Harris in a pass that Chiefs HC Andy Reid described as a “bloated Tebow pass.” Big Red’s words matter little, as Poe is a perfect 100% in both pass completions and touchdowns, while enjoying a 118.7% quarterback rating.

A “Rosey” Prediction

I already gave my prediction of the Chiefs-Texans NFL opener in my column last week (Chiefs – 42, Texans – 10). However, I’ve yet to make a Rose’s Ramblings without a prediction, so here comes the first and only prediction I’ll ever make that ends with both sides winning. It’s also the only one that doesn’t apply directly to a football game
