Rose’s Ramblings: Preseason Edition – It’s been quite some time since I last did a Ramblings post. I’m not sure why, but I think it may have to do with Mrs. Rose questioning me on the last one I wrote. “Why d’ you post that?” she asked, “Did you run out of Chiefs stuff to write about?” First, the question was hurtful. The Chiefs were in the middle of a Super Bowl-winning season with absolutely no shortage of topics to opine on. Second, the Chiefs have a storied 60-year history chock-full of legend and lore, triumphs and tragedies, heroes and goats, that I can, and often do, paint the pages of ArrowheadOne with.
Last, and perhaps most important, quite the opposite is true.
With so much going on in the world, the NFL, and with the Chiefs, it’s sometimes hard to just hunker down to one topic. Between pandemics, double-hurricanes, wildfires, NFL season or no NFL season, fans or no fans, polarizing politics… I’m more scatterbrained than usual trying to keep up with it all. It’s hard to get a handle and just focus on the task at hand, sometimes. I feel like Patrick Mahomes must have in the first half of the 2018 AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. It’s enough for an NFL fan to wistfully wish for this same time, last year, where the biggest story and controversy was whatever stupid thing Antonio Brown would say or do next!
Football Fodder
Yes, Virginia, There Is An NFL Season: I was one of the many who were bracing themselves for the cancellation of the 2020 NFL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully (I hope) that I/we were wrong. While I wish the NFL would institute a bubble much like the NBA has, I’ll happily go along. They have the put in place, in the next best thing. Thanks, in large part, to Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid. Big Red was able to simultaneously alleviate the fears of players, while also pacifying the concerns of the league.
The extraordinary measures that they’ve put in place will help ensure a safe — coronavirus-wise at least — season. Just imagine how much better off the nation would be if the same safeguards existed for us all!
Breeland Owns Up, Takes Responsibility
Kudos to Bashaud Breeland for manning up and taking responsibility for letting down his organization, his teammates, Chiefs Kingdom, and himself down for his actions that led to a four game suspension. It takes a big man to own up to his mistakes. It takes an even bigger one not to repeat the same mistake. We’re counting on you and putting our trust in you, Mr. Breeland!
Defining A Dynasty
Last year was the possible start of a dynasty. This year will define that dynasty — if there is to be one. Many have tried in the past two decades, but none, save one, have succeeded. All have fallen short: Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Giants — BTW, Tom Brady don’t forget to send Eli Manning a Father’s Day card, each year — to name a few. If the Chiefs are for real, this is the year they solidify that and put the rest of the NFL on notice.
What can Chiefs fans do to help? Absolutely nothing! Just sit back and, as legendary R&B singer Sam Cooke encourages us, “Let the Good Times Roll.”
Let’s sit back, pop-a-top, relax, and let Veach ‘Veach’, Reid ‘Reid’, Mahomes, ‘Mahomes’, and the Landlord — Tyrann Mathieu — collect the rent! The reign of Chiefs Kingdom’s regime draws nigh, my fellow faithful! Two weeks and three days until it all begins!
Chiefs Headdress Ban
I had mixed feelings on the Chiefs recent ban on Native American ceremonial headdresses and Native American-style face paint at Arrowhead Stadium. However, all my opinions and thoughts went for naught after I read this tweet from self-described “American Indian Mutt – Shawnee, Cree, Chickasaw” and lifelong Chiefs fan Connie Jo@cjkc_life09.
So, yeah — what he said.
Highlight of the Week
I absolutely love this team!
Tweet of the Week
I realize that this Tweet is not Chiefs-related, but it’s just too good not to share. Also, making fun of the Cowboys is always a good thing. Always.

Chiefs Trivia Fix
Q: Who scored the Kansas City Chiefs first touchdown ever?
A: Chiefs Hall-of-Fame quarterback Len Dawson hit halfback Curtis McClinton on a 17-yard pass for the first touchdown of the Kansas City Chiefs and the first touchdown of a 59-7 drubbing of the Denver Broncos in Bears Stadium (later named Mile High Stadium) on September 7, 1963. McClinton was the 1961 14th-round draft pick of the then Dallas Texans. He retired as a Chief in 1969 and was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1994.
It was Chris Burford, the Dallas Texans 1960 first-round draft pick, who scored the very first touchdown for the Texans, a 12-yarder by Texans QB Cotton Davidson in a 21-20 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on September 10, 1960. Burford played for the Texans/Chiefs until his retirement in 1967. Not only was Burford inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1975, in 2010, Burford, who is white, was also inducted into the African-American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame. Former Texans/Chiefs teammate Abner Haynes, an African-American, nominated Burford.
A “Rosey” Prediction
It may be unorthodox to predict the outcome and score for a game still two plus weeks away, but, I dig unorthodox! My “Rosey” prediction for the NFL season opener on Thursday night, September 10th at Arrowhead Stadium, is a good old-fashioned ‘spanking’ of the Houston Texans by the defending Super Bowl Champs.
This will not be another “come-from-behind” victory by Mahomes and crew that was their trademark last postseason. Rather, it will be one of those behind the woodshed whuppins’ of yesteryear, that sets the tone of the Chiefs 2020 campaign and strikes terror in the hearts of opposing HCs, OCs, and DCs, alike.
Final Score: Chiefs – 42, Texans – 10
