As the obvious follow up to my article last week, I am going to take a look at how our offense is shaping up in the offseason. As I said before, I understand the roster will continue to be shaped based on a number of factors, not the least of which is the draft. Based on the history or Reid and Dorsey, I again expect any upcoming changes from the draft to be largely backups and developmental players. With that being said, let’s take a look at the offensive roster in the same three sections – starters, backups (or rotational/situational), and depth.
Chiefs Offensive Starters
As you can see from this table, the starting offense is pretty much the same as last year. Parker Ehinger was the starting left guard until he went down with an injury, so I expect he will pick up there again. So, unless we find a top talent in the draft, I don’t expect much change in this group.
Chiefs Offensive Backups
This group was the most interesting to me. I see players in this group that we really should be able to upgrade, either through free agency or the draft. But there are also a couple that I think are good fits on this team. Tyreek Hill is an obvious one, but I also like Jah Reid, Zach Fulton, and Charcandrick West. I don’t think they are top talents, but they do seem to be versatile backups. That being said, I am always ready to upgrade.
After 4 seasons, I really have no idea what we have in Tyler Bray and/or why he is still on the roster. I would have thought that he would have seen some action in years past when the game was pretty much decided. Something that would allow him to get some NFL speed work and develop further. It would be nice if he is one of those QBs that holds the clipboard and slowly learns the role, then takes over the reigns and turns into a superstar. I am not holding my breath though.
Chiefs Offensive Depth
No offense (pun intended) intended, but this group looks pretty weak to me overall. I am OK with Darrin Reaves, CJ Spiller, D’Anthony Thomas, and Demarcus Robinson as depth players, but the rest look like a bunch of question marks at this point. The few that I have seen take a snap weren’t really impressive and the rest are unknown at this point.
I hope we put a focus on the offensive side of the ball in the draft this year. While I wouldn’t skip a top defender, should they fall to us, I would want to pick offense with all other things being equal.
In the end, I could see the four I mentioned making the 53-man-roster or the practice squad.
