Sunday’s Lament: Alas, Babylon?

by David Bell

My sojourn left me out of the Chiefs news network for a week — and no, it was not a tough deal… I enjoyed the time with my younger son Ian and fly fishing for trout in the Ozarks.

Alas, Babylon

Alas, No-Alex-to-Kick-Around this season. Well, of course, he had a stellar career high 2017 but for the booters, looters and boo-herd, I don’t know what they are going to do now. Or maybe they will turn on Patrick Mahomes next. Yep. That will be it. Dee Ford isn’t important enough, though he draws considerable ire.

Alas, No DJ. DJ up the middle has been replaced by a new pair of hard hitting Sheriff types in Hitchens and Ragland. I truly look forward to seeing them work against the opposing running backs. This pair is going to be very good. Outside? Houston is solid, Dee Ford gets booted like a can down the road, everyone is seeing Kpass and Speaks and seeing Old Gaga-Glory on the last hill top. You can hear the trumpets in the background. I am sure some think it’s not “Charge” but taps.

Gone Forever Is That Intercept-ologistic

Catchpenny Carnival Attraction

Our Intercept-ologist is gone and woe is me. I am sure you have heard the complaints with the departure of Marcus Peters. I won’t say more. His departure aids team persona. He did not. I am good with his leaving even if you are not.

A Foregone Conclusion

It was found out last season with trying to mount an adequate secondary defense against the pass: cornerback-by-committee is not a very good idea. Now, for that scoundrel Smith? We have Kendall Fuller in return (a totally solid corner), David Amerson and Steven Nelson… and then some. It “in’t” going to be the same but for defense, it takes a cohesive group. I think we are going to get that. Also, there are some young guys in the wings like Arrion Springs and Will Redmond and Tremon Smith that I think we are going to like it.

Deep in Centerfield, Single High Grabber

Deep is deep and as long as they can play up in the box or single high, we are going to be okay. Eric Berry is back at 29 –strong safety — the true captain of the defense: the leader of the wolf-pack. Gone is Ron Parker and as far as his play in 2017 for the money was concerned… I thought Parker had to go, and he did.

Before the draft I was completely concerned about the starting Free Safety. Now? Not so much.  I’d go with the Rookie or Murray. I think Murray can play the position but in the end I believe Armani Watts is the real deal, sore ankle or not. Then we are down to Dirty Dan, spotting in. Don’t get me wrong either. Dirty Dan is a good player and a good teammate. He gives it all up on the field. That’s good stuff and you don’t want to lose it unless another factor is the accounting or room-making issue. Sorensen is not a starter-quality talent.

Sure, the Free Safety job needs to have a “sorting” to find the starter but that will surely be Watts or Murray. Oh wait a minute… Dorian O’Daniel was spotted playing the “Mickey before the knees went” ground.

[I just had to get that “Southern Ground and Reference in, ya’ know: Joplin, Commerce, OK, Baxter Springs, KS. I still hear an only man saying about Mickey, “There ain’t no damn Yankees this far south.” He was a Cards fan couldn’t stand Clete and the Mick in Yankee land. Ken was okay at St. Louis.]

Alas, the sky is falling: already there are those bemoaning Watts getting a sore ankle. Oh woe to me. Good grief!

Folderol Means: Useless Trifles & Nonsense

After finally getting back to a place that had internet and media, I was able to follow along from the beginning of camp folderol and hype. I found some good in depth material and band wagon fanaticism. We see a lot of this going on from the well-known NFL pundits to the down home spinmeisters. Let’s not go there either. After all we have Ransom Hawthorne to give us a pretty good anticipation of what the roster will look like, an early view and you can read it –> here.

Next Up? Why It’s More of the Same, Silly

What else… Ladner Morse will fill us with daily tid-bits and film views and photos of Day 4 in camp. You will probably get some commentary from Chiefs Staff and Coaches about what it means in NFL-Speak… and so it goes. It’s still only Training Camp.  For day 3? Go to the OPEN THREAD for more information.

Yesterday, Camp Day 3 Was Covered

But now yesterday is gone, the same as yesteryear. Alex is gone, departed, flown the coop. I can hear the moaning, tops in the NFL in 2017. Oh how will we live through a down season like the one coming up? It’s all a loss and I don’t know what to do? Life is tough Bubber. Buck Up.

What of My Predictions?

I believe this roster is a lot better than many think. I think it is a tougher, spit in your eye, football mean group of guys. I think they have added the hunger back to the team, top to bottom. The Chiefs will make the play-offs at worse, with a 10-6 record but, what I really believe? Despite all the gifted prognosticators and their projections about the San Diego …er…Los Angles… Chargers or the Oakland—er… Las Vegas… Raiders? Nah. It ain’t gonna work that way.

The Chiefs win their third division title in a row. It will be a dog fight year. GO CHIEFS! The Chiefs will Win Division in 2018. Pack your Pipe and Holler at me come the 1st day of 2019.
