The Kansas City Chiefs have made their first round pick at #32 in the 2020 NFL draft and, they took running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire (CEH), out of LSU. We should have figured that a RB would be a primary target since the Chiefs have really been operating with just one starting caliber RB ever since Kareem Hunt was asked to left town. Also, CEH fits the Andy Reid mold of a shifty running back who can also catch the ball out of the backfield.
Here are Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s stats in college from Sports Reference:
Early in the draft season I was blown away by Edwards-Helaire’s ability to make people miss and break tackles. He’s a perfect fit for the Andy Reid offense and will have a bigger impact than Darwin Thompson but is a similar size and will have to learn to keep Patrick Mahomes clean. However, if he could keep the best college QB’s jersey clean, he should be able to offer the same skill in he big league and that’s something DTrain has had problems with.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire will offer the best quickness of all the Chiefs running backs. In fact, his quickness is now second only to that of Tyreek Hill’s. That quickness is seen here at the goal line:
The 5-foot-8 and 209 lbs. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a playmaking RB who is both stout and durable. He reminds me of Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren Sproles and that’s a very good thing.
While he is small in size, that may be the only way he is similar to Darwin Thompson. Edwards-Helaire played for the NCAA Champion LSU Tigers who also featured the best QB… who… happened to go at pick #1. Consequently, the LSU backfield sported the first pick in the first round and the last pick in the first round. He showed up big in big games too. Here, Reggie Bush breaks down Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s “Run-of-the-Week.”
It’s easy to see why I was big on him early in the draft season. On this next play, Edwards-Helaire goes up over the top like ala Marcus Allen.
The Kansas City Offense is going to be even better in 2020 than it was in 2019. Andy Reid also like a RB who is good at the goal line and Edwards-Helaire is that guy. This was just the first day of the draft, and GM Brett Veach will clearly have more starting quality prospects to add to the roster. No, this wasn’t the defensive oriented pick that I was predicting, but it looks like Veach and company took the best player available in running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Bravo Brett, Bravo!
