Super Bowl Is Now, At Least For These Guys

Super Bowl Is Now… At Least For These Guys – I used to hate preseason in the NFL.  No longer. Preseason for me was nothingness. Just a bunch of know-nothings and wanna-be’s trying to prove their worth.

No more.

Perhaps it’s my work here at ArrowheadOne. Maybe I’m softening in my elder years. All I know is that now, suddenly, I care. I care about the players whose last hope is Sunday’s game.

Plus, I worry. I worry about players like Gehrig Dieter, who on any other team would be an automatic number one or number two receiver.  This truth holds the same for Byron Pringle.

I worry not about our new drafts. Players like Mecole Hardman, Darwin Thompson, and Kahill Saunders can rest easy. They are safe. I’m not worried about those guys, they will be here in September and beyond.

The question is who will not be.

These guys are good. I am especially enamored with Dieter, who spent his off-season working out with and learning from fellow WR Tyreek Hill, supporting him all the while. So the Chiefs upcoming game with the Bengals is important to me.  I want to see some things from our Chiefs. Specifically, I would like to see:

Two and Out

For our starters, I want to see two and done, that is… two series, or two scores, whichever comes first. I realize that the preseason is designed to shake the dust off, but I want our guys ready and healthy come September.  Preseason is for those guys on the bubble, not for guys like Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, or Travis Kelce, who have already solidified why they are starters.

On the Defensive side, admittedly, the bar for them is low. Ranked 31st last year, there is but one way to go. We can look at no less than three games last season that would have been won rather than lost.

    • Does new DC Steve Spagnuolo know what he’s doing?
    • Is the Honey Badger the leader in the secondary that we need?
    • Will a Frank Clark/Chris Jones duo be as deadly on the field for opposing offenses as it looks on paper?
    • Will the Black Kite, Juan Thornhill, fulfill their destinies to be great Chiefs?

The Running Backs

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I fully support Darwin Thompson and believe that he is “the” guy. Nothing has changed. Darwin Thompson will end this season as the team’s number one running back. I have nothing against Damien Williams, and I wish him the best, but Thompson is the future of the Chiefs.

The combo of he, Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill is the future of the NFL.  They will prove legendary when we are long dead and gone.

The Wide Receivers

I need not delve into Tyreek Hill. We all are aware of his capabilities. I don’t need, either, to sell you on Mecole Hardman. He’s got this. I imagine figuring out coach Reid’s schemes and plays were challenging, but Hardman seems to have handled it.

My concern is, however, our fan favorites—both Byron Pringle and Dieter — because I want them there in September, but I can’t be sure.

The Special Teams

No doubt will Special Teams coach Dave Toubs produce another top ten squad. The coach never disappoints. That a team has not yet made him a head coach yet is beyond me. I want Deiter as our gunner, Hardman (or even Thornhill) as our returner, and the others on the bubble making things happen.

For these guys trying to make the squad… this is their Super Bowl.

Unless these players produce, they are history.

So, when watching the preseason game, please keep in mind (even in the 4th Quarter), this is a “Ride or Die” moment for these guys. This is their Super Bowl.
