The AFC After Week One

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs are one game back in the AFC and the AFC West. They are one game behind the Las Vegas Raiders who beat the Denver Broncos 17-to-16. Also, the Los Angeles Chargers lost to the Miami Dolphins 36-to-34 and Tyreek Hill scored two TDs and gained 215 yards on 11 receptions. Wow! For some K.C. fans, that has to hurt, especially after the Chiefs WRs turned in the dismal performance they turned in last Thursday evening. Tomorrow evening will be the final game of Week One in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills playing at the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

Miami 36, Los Angeles 34

Since this game was played in Los Angeles you’d think that the Chargers would have had an advantage, but that didn’t seem to help, or be the case, as I watched most of that game and Tyreek Hill could be seen during the Chargers last drive raising his hands in the air to get the crowd noise up. Justin Herbert and the Chargers had a chance to score the last points in the game, but they just couldn’t pull it off (0:38).

Las Vegas 17, Denver 16

In a game played in Denver — just like the Chargers in Los Angeles — you’d think that would be an advantage to the Broncos at Home… but it didn’t seem to work out that way. Also, many fans of the NFL were expecting the Broncos new HC, Sean Payton, to make a huge difference, but that wasn’t the case either (0:11).

Now, the AFC West looks like this:

.

.

While it’s never a comfortable feeling to see the Raiders in first place, or for that matter, the Chiefs in last place, we must remember that we’ve only finished week one and I have a sneaking suspicion that with K.C. losing the opener to the Lions, they will be primed and ready to take it out on the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Plus, it doesn’t really matter who the Chief play in the second game of the year, they are about to release the hounds, so to speak.

Let’s take a look at the rest of the AFC and see how they fared.

.

Jacksonville 31, Indianapolis 21

The Jags (1-0) QB, Trevor Lawrence had a good day, but threw one INT. He was 24-of-32 and threw for 244 yards while completing two TDs and had a 103.8 rating and that was enough to beat the Colts (0-1) in Indy. The Chiefs will play the Jags in Jacksonville next Sunday at noon in their Home opener, but the Jags victory against one of the weakest teams in the league is a good sign for the Chiefs who will be traveling to TIAA Bank Field with rage in their hearts (0:11).

Baltimore 25, Houston 9

Houston (0-1) started the game well enough then went cold and that was enough for the Ravens (1-0) to seal the deal.. The Texans had a 6-to-7 half time disadvantage but were making a close game of it. The Texans are also in the AFC South like Indy and Jacksonville and even though we don’t expect much from them this year, their next few games are winnable enough facing Indy, the Jags, the Steelers and the Falcons… even though they’re starting QB is a rookie: C.J. Stroud (0:35).

.

.

New Orleans 16, Tennessee 15

The Saints (1-0) new QB, Derek Carr, threw for 305 yards and had a 96.1 rating while the Titans (0-1) QB, Ryan Tannehill threw for 198 yards had a 28.8 rating with 3 INTs. That’s enough to know about this game to tell you how it turned out. Except… why was the final score so close? I expect that had something to do with Derek Carr’s one INT and one TD performance (0:53).

.

.

Cleveland 24, Cincinnati 3

With the QB Joe Burrow just playing in his first game of the year, the Bengals (0-1) blew their opening game to Cleveland (1-0). Burrow threw 14 completions for 82 yards total. That’s enough to insure that you lose any game. Their next game is at Home against the Ravens so there’s a good chance they begin this year 0-and-2 (0:08).

.

.

San Francisco 30, Pittsburgh 7

Any time you can hold the Steelers (0-1) to 7 total points, you’ve done a great job, even though they are starting second year QB Kenny Pickett at the most important position in the game. The 49ers (1-0) Christian McCaffrey gained more than 150 yards rushing while the Steelers RBs as a group gained 41. Brock Purdy, the 49ers QB, threw two TDs with zero INTs while Pickett threw two INTs with zero TDs. That tells the real story of this game (0:23).

.

.

With the Chiefs one whole game behind what will be six (6) teams after the Bills and the Jets play on Monday Night Football.

.

.

While I’m guessing it will be the Bills who win that MNF game, but it’s makes no difference in the loss column, one way or the other.
