The ArrowheadOne Inquirer:
“Just what is the Brett Veach Plan Now?”
by David Bell
We’ve had two pre-season games to learn something and I am sure we have, just as I am sure that the coaches and staff have learned a lot as well. What we learn as fans is something quite different than what the coaches, scouts and staff have learned. There’s the rub!
There’s the Rub
It is also true of pundits and scouts and analysts and those who are setting up the betting odds hither and thither. Three writers who publish articles in the Kansas City Star have different ideas about the final roster as well. The way it is viewed by me and two associate Chiefs nuts here in Southwest Missouri all agree on the following questions that the inquirer rumor mill has been churning.
For Your Consideration
Hard to pick that one or two players though. So for your consideration, our deliberation:
• Daniel Sorensen will be on the I/R for six weeks.
• Chris Conley appears to me to be a player still on the mend – He goes to the I/R because he is not fully ready
• Demetrius Harris is suspended for the first week is back on week two
• Steven Nelson’s concussion and the duration of the protocol is very worrisome and would be worse had Brett Veach not added Orlando Scandrick.
• The recovery of Spencer Ware and his readying himself to play, is also a question. Is he going to the IR? Will be ready for opening day?
• Damien Williams status and recovery remains an ‘unknown’ factor
• Dillon Gordon’s injury puts him on the PUP most likely and he will be a hold over for 2019
• Jace Amaro will be on the Roster for week 1, but… is a likely release by week 2
• Blake Mack will be bound over for the Practice Squad
• Charcandrick West will be release if not traded (UPDATE: he was released on Wednesday)
• De’Anthony Thomas will be released if not traded
• Matt McGloin not Chase Litton will be the camp arm released
• Darrel Williams will make the 53 Man roster
• Aarion Springs and Will Redmond will go to the Practice Squad with Orlando Scandricks in house.
• Jordan Stern will be retained now at least to the PS (if there’s room)
The above list of players and their status for the opening of the Chiefs 2018 season, are underlying questions. When deliberating about roster cuts, down here in the “Dixieland” of Missouri we tend to see the roster as 63 players, not 53 and not game-ready rosters of 44.
Example Abound QB?
If we used what happened in the second pre-season game, we would keep Matt McGloin as QB#3. If by Chase Litton’s play in game one, he would be #3. Even deeper consider Henne. Could Brett Veach & Co be considering a trade? A future draft pick and use McGloin to hold the clipboard? There are NFL Teams with QB problems already, so the Chiefs situation is a good one to have.
Pundit Questions?
Earlier in the year, I defended Bryan Witzmann and provided Seth Keyser’s analysis as a buttress for this. Now? I see Witzmann as an offensive lineman while improved in 2018… with Wylie having grown to be a #2 OT, as well as draft pick Parker Ehinger at OT, does Veach release Witzmann? I think he will risk Wylie for a period of time to the PS and Witzmann will make the roster and I think Hunter (OL) has flashed skill and his background says he has the desire. He goes to the PS. He’s not ready… yet.
Players that should be retained to the PS, or otherwise, include:
Veterans in danger of being released: in addition to the above, though all three of these players have been integral to Toub’s special teams, it will all hinge on youth, toughness and value added with a ceiling that is more valuable.
• Anthony Sherman(FB)
• Frank Zombo (OLB). I think Veach retains Tyrone Holmes(OLB)
• Jehu Chesson – WR play causes a draft pick’s release
So, what is the Abiding Question?
I did have a list of Safeties that included Robert Golden who was released at his own request. I don’t think that the Chiefs made this decision lightly, especially with Daniel Sorensen who is going to go to the I/R. Nor do I think the Chiefs go to week one with Eric Berry (sore heal), Eric Murray, Armani Watts and Leon McQuay. I have no reason to think that Jordan Stern won’t be released.
I just do not see it, the plan… yet.
Where did I put that crystal ball?
All spring, and last year, and the year before, I harped on ILBs and feel that Veach resolved that exposure. The same problem exists for the Cornerbacks and/or Safeties. Running Backs or even dangling QB Chad Henne with all that’s gone on could be part of… the “Veach Plan.”
Except for Starting Safety?
So what is really going on at the Kingdom? Safety is one huge weak area from my thinking and writing since the2017 season ended for the Chiefs. Brett Veach have up his sleeve? Orlando Scrandrick doesn’t want to play Safety (personal statements).
So Mr. Brett Veach:
If we are going to solve the weakness at Safety that the “knowledgeable fans at ArrowheadOne” see… what is the solution you have planned to cover the problem at Safety? To be sure, I am not giving in or giving up on Armani Watts. I want his success as much as anyone. I want him confident and ready to take it over. However, looking things over and thinking about the available Safeties who are Free Agents has me wondering? Just what does Brett Veach have up his sleeve? Is there a secret plan?
What is the Brett Veach Plan? Inquiring Minds Want to Know.
