The Beginning of the End of a Dynasty?

The Beginning of the End of a Dynasty? – when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the New England Patriots 41–14 back in September of 2014, I thought that was the beginning of the end of the New England Patriots self-proclaimed dynasty. I must admit, it has been awfully dominating on their part, I just have a hard time accepting that they have what most are calling, a dynasty. However, when the Chiefs beat the Patriots a month ago (December 8), IN FOXBOROUGH no less… that… was the beginning of the end of a dynasty. For sure.

Why? How can I be so sure? Because the Pats have lost: 4 of their last 8 games, and 3 of their last 5 games. They have also lost 2 out of there last 3 games at Home in Foxborough, the biggest surprise of all. Plus, out of all of their wins during the last half of the season, only their win over the league’s worst team, the Bengals, was by more than one score.

At this point I’d be more surprised if the Pats beat the Titans, than if they lose.

… and now for the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey used to opine)…

I heard a very interesting but, “highly speculative”

… shall we call it, rumor… that Tom Brady is waiting

to hear where his Offensive Coordinator, for many

years now, yes, his good ole buddy, Josh McDaniels,

will be coaching next year, with the idea that

he’ll sign on with McDaniels’ team.

Hmm… and the plot thickens…

We already know Brady has put his house on the market there… and… that he’s is as strong minded as his current coach, Bill Belichick, and that each wants to prove they can win without the other. Big mistake. However, Big Egos run rampant when you embrace the idea that you own… a dynasty.

Both Brady and Belichick have stated they want to continue — coaching/playing — as the case may be… but since no contract has been offered to Brady by N.E., the speculation is high about his plans.

It’s been my long-held belief that the two together… along with some incredibly good fortune, have nurtured their so-called dynasty, into being. Good Fortune, you ask?  Things like…

    • a 48-yard FG against the Rams running out the clock in Super Bowl XXXVI by a FG kicker who may be the greatest FG kicker in the history of the NFL…
    • or two other 3-point victories over the Panthers and the Eagles in Super Bowls, XXXVIII and XXXIX…
    • or the incredibly fortunate (for the Pats) collapse of the Falcons for a 25 point comeback…
    • or a bad goal line call by Pete Carroll in the waning moments of Super Bowl XLIX allowing Malcolm Butler to intercept a Russell Wilson pass).
    • or no warning by the refs to the Chiefs that their DE was lining up offsides before they called that penalty (which is customary) during last year’s AFC Conference Championship game…
    • not to mention deflate-gate… or video-tape-gate (x2), it seems they’d do anything to win, outside the lines

It may be true that you always make your own luck… or place yourself in the best position to win… but I have also felt the Brady-Belichick Patriots have just been darn lucky so very many times. Now, it appears their luck is running out.

There is also hot speculation that New England and Bill Belichick will want to trade for Indy QB, Jacoby Brissett. After all, if Belichick is going to move on from Brady, he’ll want to have a plan in place to replace the Mr. Unreplaceable. Right? Plus, Bill drafted him, so it kind of makes sense.

However, the dynamics of a volatile relationship are fully in play here with Brady and Belichick. If one keeps chirping a belief that he can not only survive but flourish without the other… then the gloves are on tight and the rope-a-dope posturing is an ever-present element of their presence in each other’s life. In my view, neither one wins, much like Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones (of course, I side with Jimmy Johnson in that case). Not that I really care about N.E. and what they’ve done, I actually want it to all fall apart and for their so-called dynasty to tumble and tumble quickly.

Why bring this up now? The stance of Bill Belichick’s to “keep it in a drawer” when referring to the coming issues of Tom Brady in New England, can have a tremendously negative impact on today’s game. In fact, it’s hard for me to see how it won’t be an elephant in the room… or on the field… as the case may be.

If Brady is thinking, “Why can’t we deal with this now, so I don’t have to live with this indecision,” (of course, he probably already knows) and Belichick is thinking, “Why deal with this now, we have a game to prepare for,” it can cause endless amounts of interpersonal and  intrapersonal (self-speak) friction, none of which, of course, is going to be expressed publicly. But boy is everyone going to know it’s going down. Hopefully, it’s going down on Saturday evening.

When the walls come crumblin’ crumblin’
When the walls come tumblin’ tumblin’ down”
