The Chiefs New UDFAs – now that the 2020 NFL draft is in the books, the Kansas City Chiefs have begun to call and sign a slew of UDFAs — Undrafted Free Agents. That’s what an undrafted player becomes once each draft is over if he still desires to play in the NFL. Here’s a listing of the newcomers:
- CB Lavert Hill
- OT Tershawn Wharton
- OT Yasir Durant
- S Rodney Clemons
- WR Maurice Ffrench
- WR Cody White
- LB Omari Cobb
- OC Darryl Williams
- CB Javaris Davis
- WR Aleva Hifo
- LB Bryan Wright
- P Tommy Townsend
- CB Hakeem Bailey
- WR Kalija Lipscomb
- WR Justice Shelton Mosley
- Safety Andrew Soroh
So, let’s take a look at each of the new UDFAs.
CB Lavert Hill
Since I was hoping the Chiefs would draft Lavert Hill, let’s start with him:
Lavert Hill is 5-foot-10 and weighs 190 lbs. which may be a bit undersized for a corner in the NFL. However, some will say he’s been the best CB for Michigan in 2019. Lance Zierlein says of Hill:
“Hill’s body control and short area quickness put him in position to make plays on the football, but when forced to cover downfield, he begins to grab and pull to prevent big plays against him.” [Zierlein] also says he is a fan of the Michigan corner’s “instincts, ball skills and cover strength.”
DL Tershawn Wharton
Tershawn Wharton is a 6-foot-4, 255 lbs. DL from a Missouri S&T. Here’s what Rotoworld says about him:
“Wharton (6’4/255) was an honorable mention all-conference selection this season, as he accounted for 59 total tackles (11.5 for loss), 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in ten games. The Missouri S&T standout left school as the program’s all-time leader in both tackles for loss and sacks.”
By comparison, Tershawn is one inch taller and five pounds lighter than Frank Clark.
OT Yasir Durant
Yasir Durant is a 6-foot-6, 331 lbs. OT from Philly who played his college ball at Missouri. He’s another player I wanted the Chiefs to at least take a look at. Apparently they did, but not to draft. Here’s what PFF had to say about him:
There are those, including PFF, who express concerns about Durant’s athleticism. However, if the football player, is a football player, then athleticism isn’t a worry. Who’s the best Chiefs OL? Schwartz, right? Who’s the worst athlete on the OL? Schwartz, right? Nuff said.
Safety Rodney Clemons
Clemons is a 6-foot-0, 209 lbs. Safety out of SMU. The catch with him is that he runs a 4.71 40 and will likely be restricted to playing in the box. With a packed Safety room in K.C., Clemons faces an almost insurmountable uphill battle to make the team. A smart player, has good technique and hits with force.
WR Maurice Ffrench
Ffrench (that’s not a typo) is 5-foot-11, and 200 lbs. and has been a very good wideout for Pittsburgh. He faces the same challenge that Clemons faces because there’s not much room in the room of WRs the Chiefs currently have. He’s done well at Pitt too breaking some guy named Larry Fitzgerald for theri all time receptions record: 156 catches for 1,637 yards. God forbid he should ever name his son, Aaron.
WR Cody White
Cody White is 6-foot-3, 215 lbs. wideout from Michigan. He had 143 catches in a three year career there for a total of 1,967 yards. Here, he makes a super off balance one-handed grab for a TD:
LB Omari Cobb
Omari Cobb is a 6-foot-3, 230 lbs. LB out of Marshall. A very good athlete, he had 114 tackles in 2019 along with 2 sacks. He had 2 PDs and 2 INTs over the last two seasons. Here’s one of those INTs on the dreaded blue turf:
OC Darryl Williams
Darryl Williams — no, not that Darrel Williams — is a Center from Mississippi State. He stands 6-foot-4, 305 lbs. and was a starter in 41 of 56 games over a four year span. Chiefs were weak at Center in 2019, so this Williams could give Austin Reiter a run for his money. Literally.
CB Javaris Davis
Javaris Davis is a 5-foot-10, 180 lbs. corner out of Auburn. He redshirted in 2015 then played in 44 games since then, with 2 INTs in each of those seasons. Here’s one of his INTs, a pick-6, and he had to weave his way through traffic to make this play. An excellent effort!
WR Aleva Hifo
Aleva Hifo grew up in California and played his college ball at BYU (there always has to be a BYU UDFA every year… it’s’ a rule on the Chiefs now, go ask Andy). He’s versatile and played WR, DB and Punter in high school and had some consistent numbers at BYU: 118 catches for 1,336 yards in a four year career of 47 games.
LB Bryan Wright
Bryan Wright is the almost ideal size for an ILB at 6-foot-3, 238 lbs.. He comes from Travis Kelce’s old stomping grounds, the University of Cincinnati. He played in 41 games for Cincy over the last 4 seasons with 99 tackles in 2019 and seems to have as good a chance as any of the Chiefs UDFAs of making the team. Here’s a little clip about him:
P Tommy Townsend
Townsend is the second Punter the Chiefs have brought in this offseason which means it may be time for Dustin Colquitt to step aside. If he does, the Chiefs would only save about one million in cap space so that Punter who takes his job will have to be decidedly better. Townsend is from Florida and is a 6-foot-2, 176 lbs. string bean who averaged 44 yards per punt in 2019 (45.4 in 2018) and a Long of 71 yards. He’s landed 44 of 93 punts (47.3%) inside the 20-yard line.
CB Hakeem Bailey
Hakeem Bailey is out of West Virginia and stands, 6-foot-0, 180 lbs., played in 32 games with 2 INTs, one in each of the past two seasons.
WR Kalija Lipscomb
Kalija Lipscomb is a 6-foot-1, 201 lbs. wideout from Vanderbilt who had 198 receptions in a four year career for 2,356 yards including 22 TDs. However, his production fell off in 2019 and he only had 47 receptions and 3 touchdown receptions but in 2018 he had 916 receiving yards and 14 TDs. His 22 career TDs is second overall for Vandy (note: that’s not Lipscomb pictured in the tweet).
But this is Lipscomb.
WR Justice Shelton-Mosley
Shelton Mosley played at Vanderbilt, like Kalija Lipscomb. He stand 5-foot-10 and goes 196. While he played one year at Vandy and he was a graduate-transfer from Harvard where he played prior to that. Last season he had 17 receptions for 307 yards and also returned 16 punts for 145 yards. Here, he shares what the transition from Harvard to Vandy was like:
Shelton-Mosley is known for his experience and leadership. Here, he’s pictured with his parents:
Safety Andrew Soroh
Andrew Soroh was a late comer to this list. He is 6-foot-2, 210 lbs. out of Florida Atlantic, and he has run a 4.50 40 yards dash. He was on the Chiefs roster last year and then cut on Sept. 1, 2019.
