The Kansas City Chiefs Select Patrick Mahomes!

They finally did it! Chiefs drafted a QB in the first round for the first time in my lifetime. Patrick Mahomes is now officially the QBOTF for the Kansas City Chiefs! Honestly, I wasn’t too crazy about Mahomes at first. His footwork is sloppy and he plays in a non-traditional offense. Here’s what I initially said about him:

Pick 27 QB Patrick Mahomes 6’2” 225lbs

I changed my choice for this spot about three times before I finally admitted, Mahomes is the only reasonable pick here. I’m really not a huge fan of his, in part because his delivery looks a bit weird, but he has great arm strength, good mobility and solid upside as a passer. If Chiefs were able to trade down a few spots, I’d like this pick better. He’s confident in both good and bad ways. When I saw the NFL comparison for him was Jay Cutler, it made sense. Even so, if Reid can get a hold of him early and coach him up for a year or two, he could turn into an Eli Manning type player.

Since then, I’ve come around on him a bit. His mobility is a big plus. I love the fact that he’s a risk taker. More importantly, he’s a great leader and his teammates loved him. The Chiefs are the perfect spot for him. He needs time to learn an NFL offense and polish his footwork. Alex Smith is one of the smartest QBs in the game and the perfect guy to show him the ropes. While his floor is Cutler, I think his ceiling is Brett Farve. Don’t get too nervous in training camp if he doesn’t look awesome right away. This kid is going to have a massive learning curve, Air Raid offense vs Chiefs‘ WCO is like speaking Spanish and trying to learn Mandarin. He’ll get it, but there are going to be some bumps in the road.

I told some people at the beginning of the draft, if Chiefs traded up for ANYONE I’d be psyched. Chiefs have stood pat and landed the best CB in the NFL. They traded down and landed one of the best DTs in the NFL. If Dorsey was willing to move up, he’s got to be pretty sold on the guy and if Dorsey’s sold, so am I. I’m so happy! Chiefs finally draft a QB, and I don’t have to stay up late writing an article trying to console fans who had their hearts‘ set on what they got, a big time QB prospect. GO CHIEFS!!!
