Three More Days

Countdown Days Until the Draft

Yesterday I looked at QBs, WRs, and DEs along with DTs. I noted that my view of things, as the draft board allows, the Chiefs should try to double-dip for DEs and ensure they acquire a three-down DT. I am not making light of drafting the top-rated player available(Best so Far).

What follows is an imagined Scenario of events and choices. One thing I do know is that Brett Veach is excited about the draft.

WR Trade-UP?

I can still see trading up to obtain their target WR. Of course, that would mean using multiple draft picks. I would hope it would be in the range of picks 19-21, where Brett Veach would only need to utilize two draft picks to move up the board. Were it up to my choosing, the targets for our GM would be either Chris Olave or Jameson Williams. Olave because he is a premier route runner. Jameson Williams because he is a player with Terez Paylor’s “Juice.” I wear the T-shirt honoring Paylor and have had questions asked of me about the meaning of the words: “All Juice.” I enjoy telling the story and chatting about NFL Football. Of course, I am not far north of the Rio Bravo. Familiarity with “All Things Chiefs” lacks understanding on the part of the populace but not wholly.

As of today, there are three more days before the draft. It’s been challenging to be patient as time wore on. My go-to sources are doing their due diligence. The one source I keep hoping for is for Brett Veach to surprise us with a significant transaction. It’s the 24th of April as I write this missive. Nothing has happened — yet!

Trading Back With the Second First-Round Draft Pick (My Supplemental Supposition Logic)

What follows is one possible set of circumstances for this draft. Plausible or not, it’s what I came up with this afternoon. Draw your conclusions.

I Imagine The Draft Unfolding

Envision getting the WR of choice with pick 29 or trading up using that exact pick. Should Brett Veach trade up, he would use a 3rd round selection. One of the target DTs might still be available. In which case, that position would be the sweet spot for this particular selection. I imagine that if this is the situation that occurs, either Davis or Wyatt is available at this point. Brett Veach makes that selection. The reason to choose a DT here is that if one of the top DTs is available, the Chiefs would be highly fortunate to select him. Of course, their target player might be DE or CB.

I can see all eyes on the Big Board, glancing side-ways at the Chiefs draft board. If both Wyatt and Davis have been drafted, I think Edge defenders or CBs will be the following choices. It may be at this point that Veach arranges a trade-back. Why? Because their target DE(or CB) will still be available in round 2. Trading out of round one with the second pick gives the Chiefs the round two trade-off position and adds a third-round pick. At this point, Veach would have three second-round draft picks and three third-round draft picks. At this time, Brett Veach would have solved the exposures for three of four position groups where help is immediately needed: WR, DT, DE, or CB.

Sure, it could be that the following solution occurs in round three. However, it is then conceivable that the top four exposures would no longer be “open wounds.”

I would be thrilled if the picks used in rounds one and two yield a WR, DE, DT(or CB). Veach could then try to use a round-4 pick coupled with any number of round-7 picks to move up again into the third round to provide an opportunity to make another top 100 selection.

If the three positions noted have indeed been made, Veach would then be able to add a second CB, DE, and/or an OT to strengthen the depth of the Offensive Line.

Finally, with the remaining Round-4 pick, Veach would be able to fill in a position group that can use bolstering: Safety, RB, Another DB.

How It Might Play Out

Round One, Pick 29 – Brett Veach trades up to pick 21 to select Chris Olave. He couples choose #29 with pick #38 to do so. He’d be willing to add a round-7 selection if necessary.

Round One, Pick 30 – Davonte Wyatt but not Davis falls to pick 30, and Brett Veach brings him aboard.

OR

Round One, Pick #30 is used for trading back and obtaining a high round-2 pick and an added round-3 selection.

Either way, the Chiefs will obtain the DE of their choice, and although it might not be Wyatt who is gone by the time the Chiefs make their second-round one pick, by trading back, the Chiefs can get one of their top valued DEs and a DT by pick #16 of the second round. My examples here might be Cam Thomas or Boye Mafe and DT DeMarvin Leal. This pairing with the first two picks of round 2 patches the holes on the defensive front four. If the CB on their draft board is valued higher than Leal, then the pick for a DB would be made, and the DT postponed.

At this point, Brett Veach would still have the last remaining round-2 pick to use. Veach can then add a DT at this juncture or double-dip for either a DE or WR.

I see the need for two DB picks, one of whom could be a Safety. Two CBs would be great as well. I am sure that LB, RB, and an OT are interspersed on the Chief’s draft board.

Suppose you envision what I am proposing as possessing the possibility of occurring. In that case, Veach is still picking players on the top 100. keeping in mind an LB, RB, or OT choice can be made. He’d be watching the draft unfold, and from those picks of other teams, he turns his attention to the Chief’s Big Board. Brett is making all these draft picks before pick #70 and could conceivably add another third-round pick by using a round-4 pick and as many round-7 draft picks as necessary to get a shot for another Top 100 player. Veach still has three draft choices to be made in round three. Veach is still making draft choices within the primary top-100 draft picks in the 2022 draft.

Although I cannot know who is on the Chief’s draft board at any ranked position, I can see a scenario like the one just observed occurring in 2022.

On the other hand? Brett Veach said in his recent presser that Patrick Mahomes wanted Veach to hold on to all draft picks, the same as Clark Hunt subscribes to. Not me. Twelve players are too many and too many from Round-7. I had cut the presser short and missed that statement. Laddie and I exchanged messages last night. I came back in and added these last two paragraphs. I sure do miss having Ladner, whom I refer to in case my ideas go flakey.

Oh well. All of us have three more days to wait and see what happens. Veach also said he would be “Fluid” as the draft unfolds. I like that idea far more.
