Second, the Kansas City Chiefs are a good football team. I mean they’re really good. Like really, really good. Like they are potentially one of the top five teams in the National Football League. If there ever was a team that was “built to win now” it is the Chiefs.
Were there some crazy moves this weekend during the final roster cut-down and subsequent waiver wire frenzy? Absolutely. When news broke that now-former Chiefs wide receiver Rod Streater was traded to the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, like many of you I was left scratching my head.
“They dumped Streater, a big-bodied veteran who had some serious flashes in camp, but kept De’Anthony Thomas and Albert Wilson?” I remember thinking. That just seemed quite asinine to me.
When the Chiefs claimed linebacker Sam Barrington after being waived by the Chicago Bears, causing Ramik Wilson to be cut, I had another head scratching moment. I thought Wilson played well during the preseason and had earned his way onto this roster. I guess general manager John Dorsey saw it differently.
There are others in “Chiefs Kingdom” who aren’t satisfied with that viewpoint. To those, I’m going to have to quote quarterback Alex Smith’s fellow first-round pick Aaron Rodgers and just say…
R-E-L-A-X
Do you guys remember when that was all the rage? Please. Take the advice.
Let’s be honest here. When was the last three-year stretch where the Chiefs won 31 regular season games? Don’t know? I’ll tell you. It was the 1993-1995 seasons when they won 33 under general manager “King” Carl Petersen and Marty Schottenheimer. It was when guys named Joe Montana, Marcus Allen, Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas wore the red and gold of the Chiefs.
It was the last time the Chiefs won a playoff game before last year? Let that sink in. It was 20 years from last time the Chiefs had as much success as they have since Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid rolled into town.
Is it upsetting that quarterbacks Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan signed with other teams’ practice squads? Yeah, I think it’s a little disappointing that those draft picks–both fifth rounders–were essentially wasted. But if Dorsey doesn’t think they have it–and it’s not like they showed anything in the preseason to indicate they do–then I’m good with the guy cutting his losses and letting them go.
Are you scratching your head as to why Demetrius Harris is still on this team? So am I, but if Dorsey thinks he’s got what it takes to run with Travis Kelce and line up in those “jumbo” three tight end sets, then who am I to question the guy?
Dorsey has taken a team that never had any potential to do anything, and turned it into a franchise that many are saying will threaten for the best team in the AFC in 2016. When you look at this team, only a handful of players were drafted by other GMs.
Linebackers Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali, punter Dustin Colquitt and running back Jamaal Charles were drafted by Petersen in his final years with the franchise. Safety Eric Berry, linebacker Justin Houston and defensive linemen Allen Bailey and Dontari Poe were drafted by Scott Pioli during his tenure in the BBQ City.
The rest of the roster has been churned and turned by Dorsey and his team, trying to find the best mix of talent to take this team to the promise land. Dorsey is never content, which is why when the moves happened yesterday morning, I wasn’t surprised.
Dorsey is a true talent scout. He doesn’t stop evaluating talent. As much as he was watching the bottom end of the Chiefs roster play during their fourth, and final, preseason game, you know damn well he was also scouting his old employer–the Green Bay Packers–for potential castaways as well.
And I seriously doubt he’s done.
Let’s not forget that Dorsey will have to make at least one more move before the Chiefs take the field this Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. Because Berry signed his tender so late, he is on a roster exemption which allows the Chiefs to carry 54 players (technically) until Saturday. That means in five days, another one of your “favorite” players will be unemployed.
Who will it be?
Will running back Knile Davis finally be sent packing? Will DAT run as fast as he can to another team when he gets the pink slip? Will the Harris experiment finally be over (please let it be this one…)?
At the end of the day, fans moan and groan when their favorite players get cut. It’s natural. It’s a part of the game and the love of football. We get attached to these guys and want them to stay on our favorite team. How many Chiefs fans were upset when they cut backup center Eric Kush last year? Honestly though, this process is why I’m a Chiefs fan.
Remember when I mentioned the last time the team was this successful over a span of three years? A guy named Montana was the quarterback. He was my favorite player and played for my favorite team, the 49ers. But when they traded him to the Chiefs, I felt like they betrayed him and me. So I left the City by the Bay and took my rooting to the City of Fountains.
I’ve been here since and don’t plan on looking back.
This isn’t blind faith placed in John Dorsey.
This isn’t more of the “In Pioli we trust” B.S. we were fed when that candy wrapper-hating New Englander was in town.
No. This is trust based on a commitment to winning. This is a belief that Dorsey knows exactly what the hell he’s doing and could just be the guy to win a ring for the Chiefs, for Kansas City and for the fans who are the heart and soul of this franchise. This is knowing that he’s proven he’s got the talent by putting together a team that has won 31 regular season games over three years–and a playoff game to boot–for the first time in 20 years.
Hey guys and gals, don’t look now, but it’s football season again.
And the Chiefs are good.
They’re really…really…really good. I mean really fu….
Almost swore right there. Sorry, Laddie! I got carried away.
They’re good, guys. Trust me. Hell, don’t trust me. Trust Dorsey.
