Top Ten Favorite Sammy Watkins Moments – No one was happier than me to see that Sammy Watkins had re-signed with the Chiefs… restructured really. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time re-watching Chiefs games at gamepassNFL.com and who can blame me. With the team achievements and new life we’ve come to know, I’ve had some extra time on my hands. In those moments of blissing out over the Chiefs season, I couldn’t help but keep thinking about how many important catches WR Sammy Watkins made during their pst two campaign. Here are a some my favorites.
10. With Tyreek Hill Hurt, Sammy Takes Over
Here’s another view of that play and some of the other plays from that game which show Sammy showing out.
9. Sammy’s Game of Inches
The second half of this video you can see that Matt Moore barely gets the ball over the outstretched hands of the DL and of course, Sammy’s one-handed grab was good, but just by inches.
8. A Thing of Beauty
It’s hard to say if I like this play more for the wonderful arch that Patrick Mahomes has on the ball or the wide open route Watkins ran coupled with his speed to the end zone. Since he wasn’t touched, it could be called, “The Immaculate Reception”… oh, that’s taken… how about, “The Impeccabile Snag.”
7. Galloping to the End Zone
Early in the 2018 season (October), Watkins showed the promise Chiefs fans had when he was signed. May think he’s not worth the contract he was given, but if Watkins wasn’t on the team in 2019, I’m not so sure the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.
6. Sammy the Cow Plow
This might look like a Tyreek Hill highlight… and it is. In fact, it’s one of the most memorable and thrilling plays in any Chiefs game in the history of the NFL… although, the Chiefs lost his game. The Sammy part to watch is how he makes TWO key blocks to set Hill free and create a path to the end zone.
5. Sammy Toe Tapping, Toe Scraping
The AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead against the Titans provided several great plays by Sammy Watkins. Here he drags his foot along the grass and Andy Reid had to challenge the ruling of “Out of Bounds” but in the end, Sammy had a huge catch to extend the drive.
4. Sammy “Out of Structure”
This play may look a lot like the play where Watkins catches a deep ball vs the Titans to clinch the Super Bowl win in the AFC Championship this year, but on both plays, as Kent Swanson points out, the play has broken down, that’s why he calls it, “out of structure.” Many believe Demarcus Robinson has a connection with Patrick Mahomes when a play has broken down, here Watkins proves he has the same dna link with PMII.
3. Owning Richard Sherman Early
Analysts often talk about how a shutdown corner can take one side of the field away, but with Sammy Watkins the Chiefs can take one shut down corner out of the game by beating him, thereby requiring more help for that CB. Here, Watkis shows how to do that, owning Richard Sherman early on in the Super Bowl.
2. Sammy is Filthy Good!
The Chiefs
1. Sammy Watkins Clinches a Super Bowl Berth
This explains more how I felt about that play:
It was a tough call to choose this play over the one where Watkins beats Richard Sherman in the Super Bowl, but getting to the big game after a 50 year drought… that was one huge relief and a play I’ll never forget.
Summary: Sammy Watkins, the Cog
Brian Baldinger does a great job of condensing film and his read on Sammy Watkins is sterling. Here’s a much better visual summary of his catches.
