Ups and Downs of Chiefs vs the Bears

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs had a great game against the Chicago Bears. So, let’s take a look at some individual players to see if they all scored on: the Upswing, the Downswing, or the Mediocre Swing.

.

Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes was closer to the Mediocre rating in his first two games so I wanted to make sure we all knew he was back to his old self: Excellent.

.

Blaine Gabbert

Gabbert had 2 INTs and a 38.3 Rating. Enough said about a player who needs no more said about him.

.

Travis Kelce

I’m fairly sure we all know how well Kelce played so I’ll not belabor it anymore than I already have in previous pieces.

.

Isiah Pacheco

Pop (as Pacheco is referred to by his teammates)… hasn’t had a breakout game yet. In three games he has gained a total 155 yards, a 51.66 average per game. If Pop continues on this pace, he won’t even break 900 yard rushing this season. Even if you add his 47 receiving yards to that, he’s not been outstanding. I keep waiting for him to have that breakout game and maybe it comes this week against the Jets.

.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

CEH hasn’t been what any of us has thought he might be and that goes all the back to when he was taken in the first round of the 2020 draft. He had the exact same number of carries as Pop in this game but only averaged 3.7 YPC. He’s often on the verge of getting a down arrow from me. These two represent the reasons why the Chiefs RB room is not greatness right now.

.

The Offensive Line

When the offensive line gives up ZERO sacks they deserve mention. Many are upset with our Right Tackle Jawaan Taylor, but I am not. He has been the focus of some truly bad officiating and that’s enough said.

.

Rashee Rice

Rice has had some shakey performances and to start this game with a drop was one of them. However, he came on strong and nearly scored on two of his catches.

.

Justin Watson

Juston Watson had one of the best catches in the league on Sunday. I don’t know why he isn’t thrown to more? Two (2) catches in this game isn’t enough and 7 catches for the year isn’t enogh either… even though he’s the Chiefs leading WR in yardage gained with 158!

.

Skyy Moore

Skyy Moore is having a solid year and although he’s second on the team in receiving yards with 112 after three game, he needs a larger role as he also has only 7 catches this year, and 4 of those came vs the Bears.

.

Marquex Valdes-Scantling

MVS has a total of 5 catches this season with only one catch against the Browns. I expected more out of MVS this season especially after his positive showing in Training Camp:

.

.

Jerick McKinnon

McKinnon has been less than impressive so far this season and is another reason I see the RB room as not up to snuff. His 9 yards rushing and 19 yards receiving just don’t cut it. This may have more to do with play calling than with McKinnon.

.

Drue Tranquill

Tranquill led the tema with 8 tackles and a half a sack. The Chiefs have been looking for a MLB backup for years and now they have a really good one.

.

Trent McDuffie

McDuffie is now the Chiefs best DB. He had 5 tackles in the game vs the Bears and here’s his other stats:

.

.

.

.

Joshua Williams

DB, Joshua Williams has been one of the Chiefs best defensive backs this season. ArrowheadPride has an article called: “CB Joshua Williams showcased his skills against the Bears” in which Maurice Elston says this:

.

“When he was selected in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, Williams was labeled as a small-school cornerback who was armed with the attributes and talents of a big-school player. His physical attributes — characterized by his size and length — aligned seamlessly with the qualities typically sought by Kansas City’s defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in his corners. Despite sharing the cornerback room with stalwarts like L’Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie, Williams has carved a niche for himself: a rotational role with fellow second-year corner Jaylen Watson….”

.

Elston also shares this video about Williams (1:22):

.

.

Many Chiefs fans were concerned that the rookie CBs from last season (Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams) would have a sophomore slump, but their hunger and skill level is now unquestioned.

.

Mike Danna

Mike Danna had 3 Tackles, a sack, a Tackle for a Loss, and a QB Hit. He is becoming one of K.C.’s best defenders.

.

Derrick Nnadi

DT Derrick Nnadi is having one heck of a year. That is likely the reason the Chiefs let Danny Shelton walk away.

.

Chris Jones

CJ is showing why he should be considered for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year Award. Although he only had one tackle, he also had a Sack, a Tackle for a Loss, and a QB Hit. Jones makes everyone around him better.

.

Whole Defense

You may have noticed that the whole defense has no mediocre or down arrows. That’s because every single defender has played so well, that the defense as a whole needs an Up Arrow… so here it is.

.

Montrell Washington

When Montrell Washington took the field to return a Punt, I had to go and look him up because I didn’t know he was with the Chiefs. Then he returned a Punt for 23 yards and looked good doing it… twisting and turning… and doing his best Dante Hall impression.

.

.

Tommy Townsend

Townsend had a good game while landing a Punt inside the 20 yard line and his Punt went 55 yards. Nice job Tommy Boy!

.

What do you think? Do you have any others who deserve an up Arrow or a Down Arrow… or even a Mediocre Arrow?
