Washington at Kansas City: Open Thread

First, please allow me to state out-rightly, that my heart and prayers go out to the families, all over the world, who’ve been, and are, impacted by the senseless acts of one person in Las Vegas. May this horror be overcome with pervasive human kindness, endless acts of compassion, pure shows of strength, ever present support and ultimately, peace. Thank you to Ransom Hawthorne for pointing out the following eloquent and important tweet.

The Kansas City Chiefs Chiefs are hosting the Washington Redskins this evening in the Chiefs second primetime game of the season in the first four weeks. The Chiefs are 3-and-0 and the Redskins are 2-and-1. The Chiefs have won their three games by an average of 12 points per game.

On one hand you may think that you can throw all that out the window in what looks to be a tough game against a Washington team that played strong and fast against the Oakland Raiders, just last week. However, the Raiders play a game that is defined by simplicity as they line up and attempt to hit you in the mouth. In that way, Oakland has become predictable, like a Marty Schottenheimer team of the 1990s. The 2017 Chiefs use an offensive approach that is varied and keeps the defense back on their heals. Keeping the Redskins guessing and spreading them out will be critical to the success of the Chiefs offense because they are likely going to be missing a few key players.

To begin with, we already know the Chiefs will not have Safety Eric Berry and starting RB Spencer Ware. Berry’s absence continues to bring a focus upon the performance of their DBs. The concern at RB is that rookie running back Kareem Hunt will not burn himself out while being given the lion’s share of the carries. However, Hunt is only being given 15.6 attempts per game so it looks like Andy Reid is managing his overall carries which will be essential to keep Hunt fresh and more importantly, healthy.

Another key player who’ll be missing this game includes OLB Dee Ford. Some will say that this won’t be a problem because Ford is not excelling but, the Chiefs don’t have a good replacement. Frank Zombo, who will likely get the start at OLB, has 7 sacks in his last 7 seasons and doesn’t have either the quickness to apply pressure on the QB nor the strength to bull rush consistently. Rookie phenom in waiting, Tanoh Kpassagnon, may get some time there but all we can probably hope for tonight if he gets snaps, is that he’s able to get some pressure on the QB while not relinquishing big plays when he drops into coverage.

We also know Center Mitch Morse will be out tonight but I believe Zach Fulton plays best as a backup Center off all the positions he plays.

The big question looming on offense is whether or not starting Left Tackle Eric Fisher will take the field? Fisher has a back that is questionable. Unless he is 100% and raring to go, I believe Andy Reid will hold him out. Consequently, I think Fisher will sit a week and we’ll get our first good look at Cameron Erving at LT. May the wind be at your back.
