Welcome Back C.J.

Laddie Morse

The Chiefs are getting closer and closer to being at full strength. Now that Chris Jones is back, all we have to do is wait for Travis Kelce to heal up completely and then get Charles Omenihu back after his 6 game suspension.

.

.

First, let’s dig a little deeper into the deal the Chiefs just made with their All-Pro DT Chris Jones:

.

.

Field Yates got it right, and so did our bloggers, in that, the Chiefs were going to have to restructure someone else to make CJ’s new deal work:

.

.

However, I’m not so sure the restructuring of Joe Thuney’s contract will be enough to get CJ back on the roster while making sure K.C. is under the cap limit.

.

.

In the meantime, the Chiefs secured a two-game roster exemption:

However, this exemption may not work if K.C. activates CJ this weekend:

.

Back to the cap room for a minute –> the Chiefs will need to create more space down the road:

.

.

While I have high hopes that Creed Humphrey will remain in a Chiefs uni, Jared Sapp is right about the Left Tackle position. Unless the Chiefs have plans to move someone already on the roster into Donovan Smith’s position, the Chiefs will need to do something next offseason to make sure they can still keep their prized position protected.

Did CJ and His Team Fail?

Since the deal CJ has signed with K.C. does not include a “no-franchise-tag clause” it means the Chiefs can turn around next off season and place the tag on him, thereby keeping him in K.C. another year (at least)… if it’s financially feasible. That may be thing-one that the Katz Brothers — his reps Michael and Jason — didn’t get accomplished for CJ.

The incentives that CJ must meet to get his extra money, must be accomplished in one less game. That is thing-two that the Katz brothers did not accomplish for CJ.

The Chiefs can, if they so choose, “tag-and-trade” Chris Jones next year… and by not adding a “no tag-and-trade clause” to CJs new deal is another way the Katz brothers have failed him. Jones has made it clear he wants to stay in K.C. so not getting that guarantee from GM Brett Veach is a failure on their part.

CJ’s fines total $2.1M for missing all of Training Camp, plus -$1.1M for week one.. totaling $3.2M. If he plays 50% of the snaps, makes the Pro Bowl, as an All- Pro, and the Chiefs win the Super Bowl… then CJ can barely make it all back. While I would not call this a failure on the part of the Katz Brothers, it is certainly not a win.

Signing a new “one-year” deal when you are 29 years old is not a win. CJ will have to do this all over again next offseason when he is 30 years old (BTW, CJs birthday is on July 3rd). Do the Katz brother know how old CJ is? Of course they do. That’s failure #… I think I lost track.

.

From Greg Sheffield:

.

“The Katz Brothers should never get another NFL client. Unless Jones wins DPOY and wins a Super Bowl he’s pretty much back to where he started after the fines. Bag on Veach all you want but IMO he’s had 3 major negotiations (Mahomes/Hill/Jones) and has won all 3 big time.”

.

What’s your take?
