What Now? How Much is

Dee Ford Worth? Part II

by David Perkins | March 13, 2019

We did it! The Kansas City Chiefs traded Dee Ford to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2nd rounder. In 2020. Well dang it. Not what we expected, but the Green Bay Packers signings kind of killed the competition for Ford, so the 49ers were a little more in the driver’s seat Tuesday… vs. Monday. By releasing Justin Houston and trading Ford we eliminated $36 million in cap overall, while saving $29 in cap space in 2019 alone. Not too bad when you add in picking up a #1 Safety, a running back who supplies depth, and for the time being, a #1 Sam LB.

Disappointed? Me too. I wanted a 2nd rounder in 2019. But all hope is not lost, and here is why:

First, I did a quick mock Tuesday night utilizing the CBS big board on Fanspeak and I was able to mock draft the following:

  • #29 Jeffery Simmons DL
  • #61 Charles Omenihu DE
  • #63 Joejuan Williams CB

Not a shabby draft for only 3 rounds and it fixes our line issues and provides an edge who can set the run edge and rush the passer (Omenihu), provides a push up the middle (Simmons) and a solid CB (Williams). Maybe not spectacular, but very promising, especially around mid season when Simmons should come off the IR-PUP list.

Second, and more importantly, we have two #2’s next year, so there is even more promise to look forward to.

Third, but why wait when you can eat cake this year? What?? Follow me here:

Following Option A

Assuming the 49ers improve a little but not a lot, their #2 in 2020 using the draft trade chart, is worth around 500+ points. By adding the 49er #2 in 2020 to our #1 in 2019 we now have about 1100 to 1200 points in trade capital. “Who cares?” you say, but it allows us the possibility to move up in the 2019 1st round to the #’s 12 to #16 range with teams such as Green Bay, Miami, Atlanta, Washington and Carolina.

Remember my first selection was Simmons at #29 right? This is who I missed by waiting until #29:

  • #11 Oliver – DL
  • #12 Burns – Edge
  • #15 Gary – DL
  • #17 Ferrell – Edge
  • #19 Polite – Edge
  • #24 Allen – Edge
  • #26 Wilkins – DL
  • #28 Tillery – DL

(not to mention #14 Fant and #16 Hockenson at TE, but this is about the defense right?)

Any of those first 8 could alleviate our pass rush and run defense woes now that JH50 and DF55 are gone. Burns, Ferrell, Polite, Allen… each have the ability to make us forget about Dee Ford real quick like (and for a whole lot less money and for 5 more years). Oliver, Gary, or Wilkins could make us forget Houston and Ford (especially Wilkins) for less money and 5 more years as well.

Note #1: in a mock on Monday night I could have drafted Gary at #29, and since QB’s are still in hot demand and the 49ers and Packers will probably not draft an Edge, a good Edge/DL has a chance of dropping into our lap.

Note #2: with the Giants now devoid of a WR1, might the Giants at #17 in 2019, draft a WR or even become our trade partner?

Plus, we can still get an Edge like Omenihu and a CB like Williams in 2019, and did I mention we still maintain all of our own draft capital in 2020?

Following Option B

We package the SF 2020 #2 with one of our own #2’s and move to the mid 20’s in 2019, giving us 2 late rounders in 2019 (unless we then move down from #29 and pick up a high #2 in 2019 and high #3 in 2019 (you know just for kicks and giggles). In essence this give us a middle #1, high #2 and high #3… all for a low #1 and a low #2 (for confusion’s sake).

In other words – Brett Veach gave us fans reason to be excited for the 2019 draft and himself plenty of options.

Disappointed? Yes. Disheartened? No! I am staying positive! Think about it this way. We just traded Dee Ford for a high(er) impact defensive player in 2019, that we keep on the cheap for 5 years, while rapidly building the defense this year.

Think abundance, not luck, and we all prosper!! What say you now, AO’ers?
