Laddie Morse
We’ve all been waiting for DT Chris Jones to get his extension signed, sealed and delivered. Some of us more than others. Of course, we know that with his extension complete, it gift wraps other opportunities for GM Brett Veach in players to go after, if he so chooses. You may have noticed that the name of this piece is not: “If Chris Jones Gets’ His Extension” and that’s simply because we’re 99.9% sure around here that CJ will get his extension sometime in the next week. So, you can see I like those odds a lot.
Chris Jones has also sated recently that he intends to finished his career as a Kansas City Chiefs DT. He’s also stated his intention about what kind of season he expects to have this next year as well:
.
.
Defensive Player of the Year. Wow. You know, CJ was having such a good year last season that he was up for the possibility of winning that award. So, it doesn’t seem so far fetched that he’d be a primary contender for that crown this coming season.
NBC has a piece called, “Chiefs optimistic about getting Chris Jones extension done” in which they say:
.
“Jeff Darlington of ESPN reported on Tuesday’s Sportscenter that the Chiefs are optimistic about their chances of getting a deal done with Jones and that they’re “likely” to get that deal done before training camp. Doing so would lower Jones’ cap hit from over $28 million, which would give the Chiefs a little more room to use over the course of the coming season.”
.
It makes sense that the Chiefs would be optimistic about getting an extension done prior to training camp beginning next week. If K.C. cuts CJ, they would be out $28.2M and if they let him play on his existing deal, he’d make $19.5M, so it seems highly likely they’ll get a deal done to extend his contract and that would lower the amount they’d owe him this season. Veach said at the ring ceremony just three weeks ago, that:
.
“These things usually get worked out right before, or right during the first part of camp, so we anticipate the same and we’ll see how it goes.”
.
Veach started out by saying he has great communication with Chris Jones people, so you have to believe the Chiefs are in prime position to bring CJ back on a new deal sooner than later.

Post CJ Extension Alternatives
After a new deal for CJ gets done, the Chiefs appear to have two basic ways they could go: a) sign WR DeAndre Hopkins or b) Re-structure CB L’Jarius Sneed (0:53):
.
.
My preference is to get L’Jarius Sneed back in K.C. for an extended period of time.

.
However, I sometimes get lost in La-La-Land dreaming about the possibilities for this offense with D-Hop on board.
What’s your preference?
