Where Are We Today?

So far, today, I re-evaluated the actions taken by GM Brett Veach. There is no problem with the moves he has made. In fact, I applaud them. The Chiefs only added to the dead cap space to a bit over $6M. That’s a very good thing. At the moment, there is abt $750k in cap monies available and a bunch of work to get done.

There is no sense going over the same ground again. Brett Veach must resolve contacts, such as Tyreek Hill’s extension, completing the Orlando Brown contract, and restructuring other players, such as Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, and other players. Until that is done, we won’t know what is possible. So the waiting game is upon us once again.

Without tuning in to the news, I can tell you that at this late hour, about 12 PM eastern, there has been no further movement regarding the Chiefs and player personnel.

Without knowing what is possible financially these are the thoughts that I have

1. Sign Za’darius Smith (Packers DE). Barring that or including signing Melvin Ingram back in the fold. Rumors and false flag Tweets indicated he was signing with the Vikings. Tonight, I have only the rumor, no fact. Smith would be a good player to bring aboard. Younger than Mel Ingram but it would be a coup to get Smith signed and also Ingram. DE Problem solved, if you include a draft pick.
2. Sign a Cornerback – Here I go along with Matt Lane: Carlton Davis(CB-Tampa Bay) would provide Veteran help for the depleted CB group. Another possibility is Stephon Gilmore but his price tag is going to be pretty hefty. Perhaps $15M. Patrick Peterson’s name has been bandied about but age is a huge question for Peterson. He has suggested that the Chiefs are a desired destination. There are several other alternatives in the Free Agent category. Chiefs Free Agent, Mike Hughes, signed with the Lions on Monday. No matter how Veach attacks this exposure, I can see double dipping for the Cornerback role.
3. Can Brett Veach sign another DT, one who has pass rush as a credential? The Chiefs re-signed Derrick Nnada who gives a 2-down, run-stopping DT. More is needed. Possible players are available. DT is probably the 3rd need on the defense side of the ball, but a primary focus in Free Agency and certainly the draft, along with DE and CB.
4. I really think it is important to draft an OLB – pass coverage is a must as that LB would be the third LB. The candidate must have speed, and high football intellect. This would perfect the LB room in the 3rd year of constructing the group as it started 2 years ago with drafting Willie Gay. Neither Ben Niemann nor Dorian O’Daniel has been tendered a contract. Brandon Smith is my candidate in the 3rd round.
5. Running Back? Several alternatives exist, such as re-signing our own Free Agent Darrel Williams. But Signing Williams does not advance the cause. Phillip McGruder is obsessed with Ronald Jones(TB). Jones has given the Chief’s fits out of the Pac-12(USC).

It’s not the time for the panic button. We fans have been through this never-ending wait period before. Example? Last season and replacing every starter on the offensive line. Do you have a candidate for the RB group? With the Chief’s OL, and the need to downshift and go to the ground game, is signing Darrel back aboard enough? Veach is not going to pick an RB in the draft until late most likely. A Free Agent seems a possible avenue. Jerick McKinnon showed us what speed and good feet could do in 2021. He has not been retained at this point, along with Williams. Beyond that? It’s more wait-n-see and the draft.
