The Question is Legit
We hear from this or that source that a Chiefs Scout was present at a Pro Day or the Scouting Combine. At the Combine, Brett Veach and numerous front office personnel were present.
Trey Koziol – the Assistant Director of College Scouting – Present at the Combine, Kozio closely viewed every drill and made records in his closely watching every drill, timed events with his stopwatch, and then recorded information in his “scouting notebook. Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy and Chris Shea, Vice President of Football Operations, were present. New QB Coach Matt Nagy reviewed the Combine film. After the Draft Combine, Senior Director of Player Personnel Mike Bradway examined the wealth of incoming information on their laptops. There were other Front Office personnel at the Combine.
At any given Moment at various events, you should expect the Scouts present to include personnel you might not expect. This would consist of medical and training staff people because a player of intent observation might have had an injury or medical problems in the preceding season. The Chiefs wish to ensure those players clear any hurdles.
Mike Bradberry (Senior Director of Player Personnel) Observes that it’s a team-building process, and with the Chiefs, it requires synergy. He said: “Everybody always stresses communication, but I think it’s really unique in our place…It starts with Brett and goes all the way down. We get in a room, and it’s just us talking football. It’s really a collaborative effort of all the guys in the building, and that’s how we get it done.”
Included in the process are dozens of interviews that take place with players at the Combine, at Pro-Days, and in Top-30 visits, both formal and informal.
These interviews show the team how the players think, their communication skills–their love of the game, and what makes them “tick.”
As Tim Terry(the Chiefs’ Senior Director of Pro Personnel) Observes:
“I’m very thankful that Brett allows us as a pro staff to be included in the college meetings and the process of evaluating these guys. We’ll draft a handful of guys and sign some college-free agents, but there will be a lot of guys who end up on other teams. Those players may be available as a free agent or through a trade down the road, so it’s important that we have an idea of who these guys are.”
Among the crucial Front-Office Personnel who are integral to putting it all together are Borgonzi, Bradway, Terry, Nutt, and numerous other professionals. They put in the work every day behind the scenes. A list of the Scouting Personnel involved in the extensive effort are:

At any given moment, contacts within the College Ranks, though not employes of the Chiefs, are never-the-less important contacts around the nation who provide detailed feedback to the Chiefs. Also included are the varied relationships with whom the team has had direct relationships via their previous experience with various Coaches at the collegiate level. These contacts provide invaluable information to the Scouting Process.
In the Field
Around the country are trusted college scouts with whom the Chiefs maintain contact. Those Scouts may be paid on a contract basis to scout players and provide reports. I do not know who they are. Those Scouts may be Player Analysts whose names we hear regularly and people who have a special relationship with the Chiefs. All of this is part of the Scouting Process for Brett Veach and, indeed, every GM around the NFL.
This is an informal review of the Chief’s Scouting effort. It is no where near comprehensive.
