With Chiefs Mahomes: Nothing’s New

When it comes to comparing young quarterbacks to those in the league right now, there is no comparison heard more than those that draw a parallel to Patrick Mahomes. Here’s Rio Romeo signing about “Nothing’s New” and while I’m sure she didn’t have Patrick Mahomes on her mind when she wrote it, the link is obvious by the video that “Wahomes” decided to put with it (0:35):

Here’s Chris Simms and Mike Florio talking about “Comparisons” to Patrick Mahomes (7:53)…

The comparison idea is a format that appears to have started when those in the know are trying to get a hold on the prospects coming into the league and then “comparing” them to those already, are or have been, in the league. Here, Caleb Williams speaks about the comparisons people were making of his play and Patrick Mahomes play (0:21):

Here, I think Dan Orlovsky has taken the comparison blueprint a bit too far by comparing Brock Purdy’s ability to scramble to Patrick Mahomes (0:26):

Sometime analysts get carried away with the comparison perspective. Here, Dak Prescott is compared to Patrick Mahomes over thier last 50 games and they look very much alike. The Analyst finally catches on to the real difference (0:57):

Lyle Graversen at ArrowheadAddict.com wrote a piece back in June called: “How does Patrick Mahomes compare to Hall of Famer QBs so far?” in which he compared Mahomes to other great NFL QBs. Here are some of his comparisons. I’ve taken the stats compiled by Lyle and adapted them for our purposes:

Here’s what Lyle had to say near the end of his piece:

“The numbers back up what fans of Patrick Mahomes

have been saying, that no other quarterback has had

the start to their career that Mahomes has. Tom Brady

has as many Super Bowl wins, but his individual

numbers don’t hold up. Dan Marino and Peyton Manning

had similar passing totals (albeit with way more interceptions),

but didn’t have any Super Bowl wins to go with them.”

With five more victories to start this season, stacked on top of those numbers, things should only look better. The Chiefs had a great QB in Len Dawson in the 1960s (and I’m glad I got to see him play) and then none for the better part of 50 seasons. Now it just seems fair, like the Football Gods have been looking out for Chiefs fans, and then blessed us with this man who know how to play the game. It seems fitting and natural that other QBs would be compared to him.
