Would You, Could You Chiefs Fans? 12-03-2020 – Like any other Chiefs fan at ArrowheadOne, I dream dreams about the Chiefs signing amazing Free Agents to get them to another Super Bowl and of outstanding drafts coming true simply because I actually once wrote and performed a Folk Rock Opera. I also daydream of Patrick Mahomes becoming the best quarterback in the NFL… oh, wait. Well, maybe Travis Kelce becoming the best Tight End in the NFL… wait, what? Well then Tyreek Hill becoming the best wide receiver in the NFL. Oh, I see. The point is… I never stop dreaming.
Promote Le’Veon Bell?
I’d like to see the Chiefs promote Le’Veon Bell to the starting role at running back. Why? Because Le’Veon Bell works best when he works more. Yes, I get that Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been promised the starting spot, but he hasn’t produced as much as we’d hoped and I think CEH could be a much better fit as the RB coming off the bench and giving opposing defenses a different skill set to defend.
CEH has 692 rushing yards this year and is on pace to get just over 1,000 yards this season. He also has a 4.6 yards per carry average. Le’Veon Bell has 101 total yards rushing for the Chiefs this season with a 3.6 yards per carry average. However, that’s exactly my point. In the 5 seasons that Bell was with the Steelers, he averaged over 4.3 yards per carry, but he also averaged over 245 carries per year for them. Give him more carries and he’ll produce more YPC for the Chiefs.
I heard this question asked recently: I can’t decide if the Chiefs OL just played the worst game ever under Andy Reid… or if they just faced the best DL ever? Yes, Patrick Mahomes was knocked down and hit way too often in the game against the Bucs, and even if they’re a very good DL, a strong running attack could cure that problem. Mostly. Make opposing teams respect the run more and Patrick Mahomes knows exactly what to do with any extra fractions of a second he might have in the process. Besides, Le’Veon Bell is a much better blocker than CEH, at this point in both of their careers.
Should Reid Use More Trick Plays?
Who can forget “Hungry Pig Right” when the 6-foot-3, 346, DL, Dontari Poe, lined up at QB and instead of plowing into the line at the goal line after the snap, he faked that, then flipped the ball to TE Demetrius Harris at the back of the end zone against the Denver Broncos. .
I have to laugh loud every single time I watch it. It’s magic to me. Recently, the Chiefs Head Coach, Andy Reid, has begun to incorporate more of these trick plays into his offense and some of them come from the players. The next thing we know, the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl and Andy has his players executing a tricky spinning play — a copycat play of sorts — from the 1948 Rose Bowl, as they reached the goal line:
I know Reid has many more “tricks” buried in his magic hat, but I got to wondering: what’s the difference between a trick play, and Reid’s normally creative offensive play calling? If you answered: Not Much… then you understand where I’m at. Take a listen to this breakdown of a great Reid play call, and ask yourself, is this a trick play, or just a really well conceived play call?
While Reid says he likes to encourage his players to make suggestions because it keeps them involved in the process, I love seeing these incredibly creative play calls no matter what. Make up a reason. I’m good with it. In the end, it’s just so dang entertaining!
Deal Anthony Hitchens to Another Team?
I know you’re aware of how unhappy I am with the Chiefs Linebackers this season. Many think their play has improved over the past few games, but I’m not so sure. Obviously, the Chiefs are stuck with the unit they’ve got until the offseason, but once that time arrives, I’d be happy to see the Chiefs make a trade for literally anything to rid themselves of not only Hitchens play, but his cumbersome contract. While some may be thinking Hitchens isn’t that bad, you must consider his contract, to fully grasp why he’s stayed on the field so much, and also why they really need to be done with him. Take a look at this salary for the next two seasons:
Admittedly, some of the categories have been removed, like: Signing Bonus, Workout Bonus, and Roster Bonus, but those don’t make up the bulk of his contract. What jumps out at me here is that the cap hit for Hitchens is more than $23M over the next two seasons. It’s appalling when you consider that he hasn’t lived up to his potential on the field. Not nearly. It’s not just me, I hear many others who long for the days when Derrick Johnson roamed the defensive interior. Now, it’s Hitchens making a tackle 5-to-15 yards downfield. I know the idea of moving Hitchens seems impossible, and the Chiefs might have to eat a large portion of his contract, but is anyone out there so hyped up for Anthony Hitchens that losing him will make them sad, and is anyone wearing his Chiefs jersey until the cows come home. Maybe I’m off here, but I think it’s time to turn the page.
Stop All the Tom Blah Blah Blah-dy Talk
It sickened me this week to hear national pundits talking about how bad Tom Brady has become and that’s the reason he lost to the Patrick Mahomes led Chiefs. Are you kidding me? There must be some kind of psychosis for those who are stuck on talking about Tom Brady. Maybe, Schizo-brady-ia? Or, maybe it’s a form of Bipolar depression like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), but instead it would be, Bradial Affective Disorder (BAD). In any case, it seems like a sports travesty, that instead of Mahomes winning… they’re stuck on Brady losing… and discussing endlessly: how can that be? Is the King dead? Yes, he’s dead. Get over it. Move on. Colin Cowherd may be the worst of the worst.
Tom Brady had a nice run. Now it’s over. He was a very good QB, but the operative word is… “was.” I, like Michael Travis Rose, think he never was the GOAT. That would be Joe Montana. For many more reasons than Mr. Rose mentioned on Monday. Nevertheless, please, let’s move on. Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes. Patrick Mahomes. Got it? I doubt it.
