Would You Still Trade

for Earl Thomas Now?

by Laddie Morse

You may have heard that yesterday, the Safety that the Chiefs have been wanting to trade Seattle for, Earl Thomas, broke his lower leg.

I imagine most fans were thinking, “Poof, there goes any help we might get this year at the Safety position!” However, I would think the opposite. No, not that Thomas is going to help out this year… although, if he’s ready by the Super Bowl, that’s good to know… but I’m thinking more for the future, as in, a 2019 Championship run.

First of all, the Seahawks aren’t going to be able to get everything they wanted for Thomas before, which was a 2nd round pick in 2019 and a possible 4th in 2020. Now, Seattle has to be willing to take a whole lot less — maybe a breakfast burrito — because if they decide not to sit on this situation… but if they do, Thomas walks away on his own in the free agency period of 2019.

So, what would the Chiefs get from this kind of trade right now. At a minimum, they’ll get the best pair of Safeties in the league in 2019. At best, assuming Berry returns to full form this season (which is also no guarantee) then the Chiefs secondary could get a huge boost by late in the playoff season.

Since you don’t really know me personally, I’ll tell you, I am a bargain hunter. I love coupons, sales, the markdown rack and thrift stores as well. So, the idea that the Chiefs could get a huge bargain on Thomas appeals to me.

If the Chiefs could go ahead and trade for Earl Thomas it would totally change the way they draft next year too. Then, they could focus on the best Cornerback and the best Defensive Lineman. Waiting until the draft to go Safety shopping, spreads those draft picks a whole lot thinner.

On top of the idea that the Seahawks would trade Thomas for less is… the possibility that Thomas would take less in a long term deal. Who know? Maybe. Maybe not but, the idea is a possibility… which makes a Thomas trade even more appealing.

What do you think? Should Brett Veach go for it? Or lay low and let sleeping dogs lie.
