Man, I have been waiting for some time to say this but…..IT’S FOOTBALL SEASON! In less than 60 hours we will know the outcome of the first game of the year, a division game with the San Diego Bolts. Sure, we’ve seen 4 preseason games to this point, but after this weekend the win-loss tally will start adding up for January and the season of hypothetical, long shots and moral victories will be over.
By now we have all heard that the Kansas City Chiefs are in a window, not only to bring the Lamar Hunt Trophy home, but to put another Lombardi Trophy next to it. That window closes drastically if the team comes out of Sunday’s game with an “L.” Roughly 75 percent of teams that lost in week one, have missed the playoff since the 1990 playoff expansion.
Need a little hometown convincing? Since JARD (John Andy Reid Dorsey) took over in 2013, the Chiefs are 2-1 in opening games, beating the Jags in 2013 and the Texans in 2015 while falling to the Titans in 2014 (I know, I just cringed too). In a direct correlation, the Chiefs made the playoffs in 2013 and 2015 and missed a chance at the dance in 2014… by one game.
While the season would not be lost if the Chiefs can’t muster the W, it will go from the uphill battle that all teams face coming into the season into a Mount Everest type climb for the newest edition of our beloved team. This is a young team at many important positions. The age of the OL from left to right is 25-23-24-25-27 and the CB’s are 23-25-23. This is a young team as a whole; there are only 4 players over the age of 30 and 5 more have celebrated 28th birthdays.
What a young team needs is confidence, and with it comes momentum. Confidence can take a team that is middle of the road in talent to being an unstoppable force, lack thereof makes it hard to win week in and week out. I think that the Chiefs are more than a middle of the road team and with some early success could make a deep run into the playoffs ending with a second Super Bowl victory.
If this young team can get the decibels cranking early in both the game and for the season it will embed that winning confidence and get that all important MO going. Momentum will be important in the next 4 games, all teams that were in the playoff hunt at the end of last year.
To add to it a win without Houston, Mauga, Charles and an unknown contribution from Hali… will give this fanbase a huge boost of confidence. Confidence is something some players may not need, others may need it more than they know. I personally have faith in the team to not only get the win, but to come out swinging. If the preseason was any indication QB Alex Smith and company are going to drive the ball right down the throat of the Bolt’s defense on long, methodical and time-consuming drives.
So what do you think Chief’s fans, would a week one loss do too much damage to the confidence of this team that they become a victim of this statistic? Do you need to see a week one win in order to proclaim your predictions of Super Bowl grandeur?
