20 Things Overheard in Chiefs Kingdom

Laddie Morse

With the NFL Combine days away, it seems only fitting to quote the fans and coaches, staff and players who have been talking this offseason. Why, because that’s all that’s going on… talk.

1. The Las Vegas Raiders coach, Antonio Pierce has made an interesting statement this offseason. He said: “We’ve got the Jordan Rules and what I’m calling from now on as long as I’m here, the Patrick Mahomes Rules. So you remember when Jordan was going through it with the Pistons, all those guys in the days before he became ‘Michael Jordan’ – Air Jordan– the Pistons used to whip his ass. Anytime he came to their home… Elbows, Feeling em, Love Taps, we in their head, mentally, physically, emotionally… spiritually, ’I’m touching you.’ “

It’s a bit surprising to me that the NFL hasn’t sanctioned Pierce by now. They may move to do that still but I’m surprised they haven’t taken immediate action.

2. ESPN’s newest analyst, Pat McAfee, said he loved the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce spectacle during the Super Bowl.

3. Kansas City Chiefs Player, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Added To Heroism “Roster” Following Super Bowl Celebration Shooting. I’ll paraphrase what someone said to CEH: “You only have a few years to play football, but the rest of your life to be a good human being.”

4. Tashaun Gipson Sr. said, “That is just a regular f—ing quarterback” referring to Patrick Mahomes. Sure glad this “regular f—ing quarterback” is on the Chiefs team!

5. From Charles Omenihu’s Instagram page he says: “Surgery was a success. I appreciate all the well wishes and prayers. I’ve been through the dark before and God has always guided me to the light this will be no different. THE JOURNEY BEGINS. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you” this is the Lord’s declaration “plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

6. Jeff Darlington as ESPN said this week: “I would rather Mike Evans in this offense than Chris Jones on this defense,” Darlington said. “This is a team that redefined themselves from one year to the next… they’ve got to put weapons around Mahomes. They can’t fall into this trap where they believe they can just win Super Bowls year after year without weapons.”

7. Adam Teicher said on Thursday: “Chiefs are preparing to lose Tommy Townsend, maybe. Townsend will soon be a Free Agent.”

8. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said of Patrick Mahomes: “Patrick Mahomes IS THAT DUDE.” Indeed he is.

9. Media keep asking Andy Reid why isn’t he retiring? He said after the Super Bowl: “Honestly, I haven’t even thought about it, but I get asked it.”

10. Adam Schefter at ESPN says of Chris Jones contract: “Due to his 2023 cap number, Chiefs DL Chris Jones’ projected franchise tag would be $32 million – instead of the regular $19.7M – making him an unlikely tag candidate.”

11. L’Jarius Sneed was quoted as saying “Pay Me, PAY. ME.” on the Kay Adams “Up & Adams” Show last week. LJ also said: “I don’t think they got enough for both of us. Hopefully they got enough for both of us. But you know, they gonna make it happen. I hope so.”

12. Brittany Mahomes said of her and Patrick’s daughter — Sterling Skye Mahomes, who turned 3 years old on Tuesday, Feb. 20 — and about her birthday Brittany remarked: “The face of a girl who just sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to herself in her bed for an hour instead of taking a nap.”

13. Speaking of Brittany Mahomes, she recently — 2/08/24 — did a photo layout for Sports Illustrated. Carol O’Bleness quotes the editor in chief MJ Day as saying: “Founder of the world’s first ever dedicated stadium for women’s sports, Brittany’s journey has surpassed all expectations, inspiring others with her tenacity and unyielding determination.

14. Brett Veach said recently and was quoted by Jesse Newell at the KansasCityStar.com : “They’re all big, because when you’re a good franchise, and you’re picking later in the draft and you have less to spend and you don’t have a ton of cap space, they’re all difficult.

15. Evan Abrams (don’t ask me who that is because I don’t know) says of the Chiefs: “Since 2019, the Chiefs are now 5-1 when trailing by 10+ points at any point in the playoffs. The rest of the NFL is 6-48 in those games in that span.

16. Chiefs Beat Reporter Matt McMullen said of Patrick Mahomes last week after the Super Bowl: “Mahomes added to his legend on Sunday, leading the Chiefs back from yet another double-digit deficit to secure his third world championship. He recorded 391 yards of total offense in the game – tallying 325 net passing yards and 66 rushing yards – while amassing 68 percent of that production in the second half and overtime.

17. Here’s Daniel Harms breaking down a Super Bowl stop by Leo Chenal, L’Jarius Sneed and Nick Bolton. Here’s what he said: “Watch how Leo Chenal is going to force him back to the inside, where you have Nick Bolton down here doing a really nice job, you know, of kind of forcing everything back to that way.

18. In a statement by the Kansas City Chiefs on the violence that took place last week: “We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City. We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department. At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for. We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.

19. Travis Kelce who sang from the podium following the Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII victory: I’ve got friends in low places…. inspired Garth Brooks — who wrote the song and was totally blown away when Kelce began to sing his song as he watched the Super Bowl post game show — to say: “I’ll send a plane if you want and come and get another shot at the title. If you want to come sing that, I’ll send a plane. You can come by yourself or bring your brother or your gang, whatever you want to do. The plane holds 11, just remember that.”

20. The daughter of CEO Clark Hunt is Gracie Hunt. She said recently: “We know how special this Chiefs era is so we make a point to soak up every moment,” she said. “It’s such a difficult journey to reach the AFC Championship game, let alone to win it on the road as underdogs and then earn the right to go back to the Super Bowl, and I just feel so blessed to have so many joyful memories.”
