Breaking News: Chiefs Release Jaye Howard

In a surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs release defensive lineman Jays Howard a few hours ago. This comes as a surprise given his performance prior to his season ending hip flexor injury last year, as well as his contract. It seems they could have saved some money by releasing him prior to March 11, 2017.

Howard was thought to be coming back as part of a strong defensive line with the departure of Dontari Poe. He had a very solid 2015 and was doing well in 2016, prior to the injury. Combining his recent performance with letting a $2.5 million dollar deadline pass, leads me to believe that something else has happened or is about to happen to cause his release.

Either way, this opens up another position for the draft needs. I still don’t see it becoming a high round need, but it might have jumped to 5th/6th round need. We have seen what happens when our line & thumper can’t occupy the offensive linemen. With Poe’s departure, no real thumper, and now a veteran like Howard being released, we need to find some support here. I hope the Dorsey/Reid headshed have a plan for the upcoming draft.

Best of luck in his next endeavor. I enjoyed watching him play for KC.
